I discussed this cruiser with the Op/ seemed very genuine and Up front. Looks clean and no bs. I’d certainly want records, yet 63k miles.... well I guess I’d over look that.

Not sure, yet this gentleman pmd me very upset- stating information. I have no affiliation with sale. So. I’d prefer t step aside.

Can you provide the vin? If it’s been maintained at the Lexus dealer, then the Lexus owners site will have all the service records.

Fellow mudders. I have a problem with authenticity on my lx. Im investigating and getting an education. My 99@ 180,000 miles was a little warn and frayed but still ran fantastic. This is fresh and crisp and like new but might i might be a victim. From seller Ill keep yall posted.

What’s the vin?

You likely got a fake carfax from the seller when you purchased this, like many others on this site from the same guy in San Diego (me included). If you ran a new carfax and it’s showing more miles, that’s that. Not really any looking into it to do.

Mudders -

I'm seeing this more and more out of the San Diego area. These really nice vehicles posted and reposted on CL from SF down into SD; the sellers use the same names (Tom, Jay, Jason), won't send the VIN/CF, and are very hesitant to provide information (including their names). I understand the ODO swap, but not sure how they get these looking so pristine without losing significant the margin from the scam. Anyway … Just two weeks ago, I found a 2000 LX one owner with 64k miles in San Diego, asking $18.5k. Pulled a Carfax on my way to meet the seller - turns out, it had 5 owners and over 250k miles. Must be the same guy/guys.

We should be banding together to compile information on these sellers - names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, license plates, records of communications/emails/texts. Every victim should call the police and file a report, along with a report to the FBI at IC3.gov. This is not only highly illegal, it's cutting into the foundations of our enthusiast community.

Thoughts?

So, When it was About to be purchased... you didn’t look at the title And noticed the miles? Not condescending, just asking.

I've trained myself to skip all listings from San Diego on this site and CL. Not worth the risk, for me.

If someone wants to take the chance, make sure you do your homework well in advance of spending any time and effort to see the vehicle in person. Any legit seller will be forthcoming and transparent on any and all details from the get-go.

In SoCal, its a thing to hack the ECUs and reset the miles. I hear young people talk about it ALL the time. How easy it is to get done. Especially in lease returns.

I often ran into this same scam (VIN switching in the listing and Carfax) when I lived in the Bay Area of California. Here’s the practice I adopted and would recommend for anyone buying a super low mile Cruiser of any generation, particularly from any rust-free, high-demand areas, like California.
1. Insist that seller text pic of the title, showing the VIN on the tile.
2. Insist that seller text 3 or more pics of actual VIN locations on the dashboard, some doors/liftgate
3. Really carefully inspect all those VINs to be sure they match each other, but MOST IMPORTANTLY that YOU RUN YOUR OWN CARFAX ON THOSE ACTUAL VINS, never a VIN posted in the for sale ad.
4. When you physically inspect the vehicle, repeat steps 1-3 in person, both with physically holding the title and then physically inspecting 4+ VIN points on the vehicle.

I found that shady sellers would disengage from me, typically, before I could even get to the vehicle to inspect.

Don’t ever let greed—or them making you feel like it’s the only one in the world—deceive you into skipping these steps.
There are always more fish in the sea.
And sadly, there are more and more of these sharks to take advantage of low-mile seeking buyers.

Happy fishing to all of you fellow muddies.
