We just picked up an 03 GX470 with 60k miles. The truck was built April 03. The stangest thing is happening on the wheels. The paint is bubbling up and peeling off, back inside the spokes. I have never seen this happen before. The truck is a southern truck. Would you think the Lexus corrision warranty would cover wheels. I am going to ask because this is crazy for a truck this new.

Otherwise it is a great vehicle. It has NAV, Mark Levison, 3rd row and rear air. I really like the interior and all the features.

Thanks,

If you can get it done under warranty, have a look at the spare as well.

I would grill Lexus for new wheels, givent the fact that they have 4 year bumper to bumper warranties.

And it has been to the dealer for every service and I guess no one noticed.

I will take it over and see what they say.

I got a call and Lexus will replace the wheels at no charge. I just have to pay to have the tires removed and reinstalled. 4 new wheels for $96. Not to bad. Lexus is stepping up and doing the right thing.

You should try to see if they will let you keep the old wheels so you can use it for snow tires or just spares.

Did a search for "wheel paint problems" and this was the first post that pulled up (and the only relevant post on the first two search pages).

I just picked up an '03 UZJ 100 with 83,000 miles. All four wheels plus the spare have bubbling/peeling paint. There is one in particular that is really bad. Any other experiences out there? We did purchase an extended warranty through the Honda Nissan dealer we purchased the 100 from (we did not notice this problem until we got it home).

Thanks.

I have never heard of this issue on a 100 series. The GX was well documented around the net and Lexus gave us 4 new wheels. I would try your Toyota dealer and explain it is a corrosion problem because corrosion is covered for quite a long time.

bubbling like this? :D

That looks like a hygiene issue. I'll take a picture of my worst wheel and post it. Is there an IH8MUD iPhone App yet?

Here it is. The others, including the spare have this same issue, and in areas other than around the valve stem. I am assuming these wheels are painted with a liquid-based paint versus powder-coated? I have never seen anything like this on OEM wheels.

It was not as bad as the first picture. More like the picture near the valve stem.
