Symptoms - Leaking CV boot on the driver side, boot closes to the wheel. The leak is at the small end of the boot (axle side). This just started. I did the figure eight test in the parking lot and I have no weird noises coming from the CVs.

1. Can I reband on top of the existing band? Is this recommended or should I cut off the existing band first? What tool do you use to cut off the existing band?
2. Can I add grease? How do you know if you need to add grease? What is the recommended grease and where do you purchase it?
3. What is the recommended band and tool?

I have searched on this and the answers seem to be spread far and wide and it would be great to have them in one thread.

Thanks,

A little grease seep is OK on these. So how much grease is it puking? And if its puking alot of grease how long has it been like that? The reason of course I am asking is to try to determine if rebanding without removing and doing a boot rebuild or not.

Yes you need to carefully, so not to damage the rubber boot, cut the band off (Dremel). Then using bands from NAPA reinstall. There is not a way to get the CV lube back in on the rig...well there is I guess but your rig would have to be on its side :D to do it!

FWIW: When I recently rebooted/regreased my CV axle I didn't use the POS (IMO) Toyota bands...I used the NAPA bands because they can be cranked down a little tighter...

For cutting off the band, I just scored the existing band with a cut-off tool/dremel (without cutting completely through the band), then I just gently pried the band off with a screwdriver and/or wire cutter.
