Hey I am trying to find a cheeper version of the Diff switch for the FZJ80. the one that Slee offers is like 50 bucks and i was looking for something around 20 bucks.

Any know how?

Slee and Toyota sell the same switch. So you would have to do something different like use a hazard switch out of a wrecked 80 or build your own.

Like Romer said, the switch for the Hazard lights is the same electrical configuration as the Diff lock switch, but with a different graphic on the face. Those are easier to find used for cheap, or just go without your hazards when you go offroad and switch the plugs around. The best option is to just save up for the right switch thru Slee or CDan.

Ahh i see. and i am assuming that they run about the same price. I like the idea of using the hazard switch. I will take a look.
Thanks for the input.

The same hazard switch is used in a bunch of Toyotas, so they are easy to find in bone yards cheap. Makes a good :hillbilly: upgrade, brother Brian did his with a hazard switch, removed the hazard graphic and printed, made a difflock one for it, works great.:hillbilly:

Russell,

Don't forget to do a search here for an article on the center diff. lock switch installation and the #7 pin mod.

And thanks again for the "skeet shoot", I had a great time.

Russell,

Save your money, I'll convince your Dad that its a must have item for your vehicle, and that he should take pity on a poor college student. If you get a chance to come down here this summer we'll put it in then and do the 7 pin mod. at the same time. If not, we'll tackle it next time I'm up there.

Take care,

Uncle Flint.

P.S. Don't let your sister find out your "sign on" name. I can see her changing that (a) to a (u)...giving it a whole new meaning.

How does $3.40 sound? Inspired by 1000 Oaks' "How to wire a home-brew CDL switch" thread, I took a trip to the local salvage yard and procured three hazard switches from 91-93 Tercels. I figure at least one of the three will work, and I should be able to sell the others to folks here, assuming they all function properly.

Do you have any further details on how to remove the front graphic and replace it? I read CDan's ROTW post on this, but I'm still a little hazy on the details.

Did Brian or Dan actually remove the little clear plastic square in the middle of the switch and abrade the hazard symbol off of the back, or did they just print something that would fit over the top of the switch without any disassembly? I failed in my attempt to disassemble the switch to the degree necessary to access the back of the clear plastic lense.

I don't know and haven't seen it, he is out of town till after the 4th.

The plastic square comes off from the front. It is held in with a sticky glue. I changed mine today by gently prying it off with a utility knife. No dissassembly of the switch is required. Then I sanded the old graphic off (ex Hazard) with 600 grit after an unsuccessful attempt to scrape it off. The plastic piece went right back in and stuck. If there isn't enough glue left in the switch, you might want to try something like 3M spray mount (or "spray remount" might be an option), but watch out because the stuff makes everything in the vicinity sticky (so don't spray it in the vehicle or on the switch!)

What kind of material is the factory graphic? Paint? Plastic film?

The image is printed/painted/silkscreened (I dunno) onto the back of a clear plastic rectangle. It came off easily enough with the 600 grit.

Dgranth, did you make the image on the diff switch in the picture you posted? If so, how? From time to time I've considered modifying factory switches for purposes for which Toyota does not make applicably marked switches.

I used a paint program, it looks pretty bad on the screen, but behind the matte finish of the plastic switch cover it looks fine. I plan on experimenting with a little color since the factory switch printing is a bit offwhite.

Don't know if anyone has posted their versions of the graphic, but here's my "Art"work. Printing to the right scale was trial and error. Rescale it using a paint program until it comes out right. I use Linux, so I can't help with specifics.

I'm going to pick up some mailing label stock like CDan suggested and work with that.
