The PO had put in brake fluid and the steering was stiffer then anything. I got a workout just driving the truck. I flushed the system as best i could and put in new Power steering fluid...although its better it still is stiff. Anything else i need to look at? Will it take some time for the new fluid to really work its way in there?

I have a similar problem right now but just found out that it is the bearings on the king posts in the steering knuckle

Don't use power steering fluid. Use F type brake fluid, and add Lucas Power steering stop leak. Mo' betta'.

F type brake fluid? We are talking about the steering right? Dexron fluid.

say WHAT???

The Toyota P/S system calls for Dextron II (Now Dextron III) which is automatic transmission fluid not power steering fluid. I think it's thinker, anyway should be nice and red so your cruiser looks like it's bleeding when the P/S leaks.

Chris

You're right. Sorry it is Dex that I am running. Used not BF, but ATF in my other truck. Lucas stuff has also helped the ease of steering, and cut the groaning to zero.

Think I'll have another glass of wine... doh!

yes, ATF dexron II or III in PS system, it indicates it right on the PS resevior.
I overlooked the 1st time too  .

OK...i drained the fluid again of all power steering fluid and put in some new Dex III fluid. A lil' better then the power steering fluid but still is a lil' tight. Do i need to wait a lil' bit until the Dex III works its way in the box? Or is it a larger problem?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but good info here.

Mine's low, not sure what's in there but it's gold-colored, not red, so assume it's not ATF. Went to get Dexron II and all they had was Dexron III, any danger of mixing the two?

No danger. Flush is good in any case though.

Dexron III supersedes Dexron II -- no troubles, no worries....
