Air Filters Tested- K&N sucks

I'm curious now. Does anyone know, and I mean KNOW not guessing, who makes the TRD filter and where would it stack up in this sort of test.
The K&N did not do well at all. IF the TRD is a rebadged K&N then I'll have one available for sale!
 
It just goes to show how easy it is to bias the data. There are plenty of tests out there that have the exact opposite results. With the money, I could put tests together that would make the K&N look awesome. Also, I can't trust their view at all because of the axes on the graphs. They are screwing with the visual effects of the data by not showing the full extent of the different bar graphs and curves axes. A big NO NO in engineering.

The big push with K&N filters has been how much air they flow ... which they do very well. The downside is the piss poor job they do of filtering the air. Late Model dirt track racers refuse to use them and only use Wix (NAPA Gold).
 
Reguardless of the testing you should avoid K&N if possible. When I was wrenching professionally for GM we would on occasion void the entire warramty on a newer vehicle if we found one of those under the hood. Most common problem being scoring and pitting on the cylinder wall surfaces. This was happening due to the K&N letting two much particulate through the filter, specifically fine sand. Fine sand will act as fine sand paper on a cylinder wall and over time will result in the premature failure of the rings and valve components. I highly doubt the tiny if any performance gain outweighs the potential for damage.
 
Nice info! Thank you... someone finally put up and gave results. I always knew they let more dirt through, but figured if I left the filter dirty it would catch more while staying more efficient.... My TRD is gone, same construction as K&N.

Anyone else hear the phone ringing at K&N's lawyer's office? :D
 
On that note, what do you guys run on your Webers for filters?

Yeah, i'm not a huge K&N fan myself, but my paper filter on my weber air cleaner is in desperate need of replacement. Wonder if I can get wix filters like I use in the rest of my vehicles for the weber air cleaner?
 
OE for Weber is a redline filter if I remember correctly.
 
I didn't read the entire report, but I'm also skeptical of the results. If the data are correct, we should replace all our HEPA filters at work with AC Delco air filters!
 
Well. This is odd. If i ran high end paper filters through my bronco they would always be far cleaner than the K&N i ran in it. If you did the same driving two weeks in a row alternating weeks there would be a huge difference. :confused:

A well oiled and very dirty k@n, along with a silly pre-wrap, that is also soaked in oil and very dirty... :)

All other filters are Caterpillar, John Deere, or Wix....

I run only WIX oil and air filters, as good or better then OEM, but cheaper and my parts store down the street stocks em.
 
I am running Wix (Napa Gold) as well. I had heard the same information some time ago when I had a K&N air filter in my old BMW MC. One of the old time mechanics at the dealership explained that engines become very dirty (no oil filter in these old beasts) because of the K&Ns. The oil slingers get clogged and the large end rod bearings fail. Ouch!
 
i don't trust product testing done by most and when i weigh the price savings of reusable filters, i'll stick with my k&ns. just food for thought. if i didn't get many miles out of all the motors i've had, then i might consider going paper, but i've gotten up to 400,000 out of motors without rebuilds. i'm happy with that.
 
You couldn't pay to use K&N filters on my vehicles. I see no real benefit of using K&N when you consider that I can buy a air filter for my SBC motor for $5.00.

I would much rather just replace and throw away the old filter than to waste my time cleaning a K&N.

Cheap air filters would be yet another reason to run a SBC.
