From what I've read on this board, a smaller filter might help the startup rattle. Does toyota make these? Is anyone using a smaller non oem filter? Part numbers will help.

one option was the premium toyota filters -- they were the 20004s -- they're no longer made, though i found some by looking at toyota.com under "dealers" and calling their service departments --

-- much to the chagrin of some --

There's lot o' info. about the 20004 ( IIRC ) smaller, 'good' oil filter on the forum.

But I don't think Toy. makes these anymore; I know in some previous threads, people talked about hording these and getting massive suppply quanitites before they ran out.

I'm not sure if you are going to be able to find these. SOme boardmembers might have some for sale, maybe your TOy. dealership might have some left in stock.

I haven't been able to find any in my area (NE Ohio) and I think I am SOL. My rattle is not bad at all, so I think things are going ok (at least not compared to some other rattles reported in previous threads).

Best.

I still get the start-up rattle with the smaller filters. Perhaps it's better... hard to say cause that's all I've used. They are nice filters though.

Some people are hoarding the small filters...whatever

I just ordered the best OEM filter currently available from C-Dan. It's the bigger filter (still made in Japan). Works fine for me.

Yes, but it's not as simple as small=less rattle. The '04' filter was a high quality OEM oil filter. It was also relatively expensive compared to alternatives from Toyota and aftermarket filters. The '04' filter had a superior filtration material and other design features like the anti-drain-back valve. I don't remember all of the nuances of the design; just that it was a superior OEM filter.

There are other OEM filters that are good including a replacement small filter and the original large filter that I believe C-Dan still has in stock.

IMO, startup rattle doesn't have anything to do with the filter. Switching to synthetic oil and cleaning the throttle body should make it go away. Last resort do the high idle mod.. all 3 are well documented. hth..

real men have at least 20 of the little guys stashed away!
Girlie men use the big one (to compensate...) :D

I should mention that I'm currently running 15-40 w/current oem 'big' filter. Does the 80 have an antibackflow valve built in above the filter? Where's cdan?

My 97 doesn't make a sound but my dad's 95 would, his was mostly due to the high idle and s***ty small toyota "fast moving parts" filter put on during dealer oil changes. After the idle mod the rattle pretty much stoped but the larger Japan made filters also helped. We both run the K&N hp3001 filter now and love them, they are about the same size as the large Japan made toyota filter.

So whats the shelf life on the rubber gasket on the filters?

Eric,

Phil Lesh (ca: 1994) of the Grateful Dead (well, I guess now of 'The Dead'). They're no longer Grateful....

Ok, now I'm looking at the idle mod.my startup is ~1500, could be the issue.

1500RPM start up idle is low. I would be happy with that.

The idle mod looks pretty straight forward. Can someone who has done it tell us how many:banana:job it is.

Whodat- the idle mod is a band aid. The real problem is a dirty intake, if you remove your throttle body you'll see.. lots of little holes that air should be flowing through are gunked up. The TB cleaning is not hard... I think the FAQ's has a good writeup about it linked, if not it's in here. But if you jump straight to the idle mod then you're treating the symptom, not the disease.

I thought bigger was better! :flipoff2: Oh, we're talking oil filters.

I have read that all the Toy OEM filters are no longer made in Japan. I have also used the K&N filter and the NAPA Gold filters, both larger filters and think they both perform very well.

Eric, didn't realize you had great taste in music. Good to see. I still say that 1974 through 1978 were the best years.
