As promised here are photos and a report of the prototype bumper side hoops from Wild West Offroad Fab. Just ran the Rubicon with them. Leaned on the left side hard, right side less so. See pics. Neither time did they flex or deform the bumper metal. The impacts did gouge the metal, see pics, in what I think would be labeled quite normal for the impacts.

In the final analysis, two big thumbs up! I do believe they saved the vulnerable rear quarters and more importantly didn't get bent or damage the bumper themselves. Very cool! Here are the pics. Questions welcome!

Lean on me...

The lean! It actually helped push the truck away from the rock. Strong!

Yup dats a rather impressive 'lean' lol.

If I were designing these hoops from scratch I'd make that front leg tilt as far forward as possible to get as close to the wheel well as I could.

They do look pretty strong for what is basically a 'bolt on mod'.

So...do you think you'd have sustained body damage to the rear quarterpanels w/o these hoops?

Good thing you had thoughs made.

They look like a good addition to the bumper and they did there job.

How was the con?

Sorry been gone, am in Montana driving the new 2008 Land Cruiser!!

There is a good lean in that photo. When I get back I will post another pic. Lots of weight on the hoops. Check out the gouges in the steel. For a bolt on mod they are very good.

I have already ripped out the passenger side tail light and bent the hell out of the sheet metal so yes, I am quite certain these saved me rear quarter panel damage. Really a smart mod for Kaymar bumper owners--love 'em!

They look like they held up well.. and they'll match my front fender tubes nicely. I'll have to pick up a set. We never take our rig through anything that crazy anyways.

Do you have to pull the entire bumper off to bolt them up?

wow! i would have called BS before i saw the pics. I wouldn't have thought they would hold up, but obviously they did, and quite well too.

Definitely not. There is ample room behind the bumper to reach in and hold the backing nuts and washers. The Kaymar stays on throughout. Install is about 10 minutes per side--drill the holes, hold up the hoops, bolt 'em up, hit the Rubicon!:grinpimp: Will post another pic Thursday p.m. Cheers!

Do I smell an introductory price group buy here?

here are a couple more

here's a couple more pics. The impacts here were on the lower section where the welds join the tubes to the plates. No worries, all held up great.

Cheers,

Not that it matters, but that shot looks posed. There is room to the left to avoid the rock, and your front wheels are turned to the right--into the rock......

I wouldn't even know how to pose something on the Rubicon, while driving a hoss like an 80. :) It was all I could do just to keep going and save steel! That shot isn't posed, I can tell ya that. There were rocks/ledge in front, not open trail, and a pivot turn around that rock was the plan. We turned right a tad early and the rear went in. Bang, lots of weight on that corner. You can see how the Cruiser leaned over onto the lower part of the hoops. Couldn't have asked for a better moment to see how it held up. I truly cannot wait to do it all again next year!

I don't know Dave, I kinda agree with KliersLC, there is extra room on the left, next time please find a spot where there is only enough room to squeeze the truck in!

Seriously though, with scratches that deep, they look like you ran them up hard against a few rocks on your trip. Hope that means we saved a little bit of your sheetmetal.

not trying to hijack this thread, but i'm also glad to see the kaymar rear bumper getting hit on with serious wheeling. I have always for some reason liked the kaymar rear for it's utility look and also it just looks "right" on the back of the 80. Plus, needing to get to the roof rack to add or remove gear, the thick step is another attractive part that i like. I think Luke's 4x4 rear is the best looking on the market, but i don't see much of a step (i know it's intentional for improved departure angle) and see myself slipping off and busting my shins trying to access the roof-rack.

carry-on.
