Here are some shots of Ali's favorite part of the block: the oil cooler. Behind mine I found some nasty. Not sure what happened in there but I do know that it won't happen again. The upsetting part is that is what my coolant passages look like :o

Now you are glad we got that cool three-brush selection aren't you!

The Scotchbrite works wonders. Glad we got in there and tore it up Ruadhrigh.

One question about your head gasket rebuild.........................Did Onur wear a shirt? If he didn't what did you do to protect the engine from all the hair, or was that the third of the scotchbrite pads.

you guys have all the fun with your 80s.

my 60 keeps going and going and going.............................................

even after overheating three times ;p

i still feel your pain :frown:

The color is interesting...sorta orangeish? The oil cooler section is often overlooked by HG workers, glad you took the time to clean it. Otherwise, I'd have to give you some grief!!!

Was it much of a deal to separate the lower intake from the head, and then separate the upper intake (or did you do it the other way around?)? The FSM shows pulling the head, upper and lower intakes as a unit and then separating, but then you get into the engine wiring harness PITA. The way you did it looks a lost easier, but I'd like to hear more about it from you or Onur.

Thanks,

Hey brother R2:

IIRC, what we did was separate the top of the intake from the bottom (going from underneath the engine--finding all of the nuts was difficult but once we got the nuts and other bracketry off, the top came out pretty easily).

Once we had the top off, we then took all of the studs off of the lower intake that go into the head. Once that was off, it was still difficult getting the lower portion of the intake "away" so to speak from the head before pulling the head off. We had to deal with the piping in the back of the head (along the fire wall) as well as the stupid EGR stuff.

We then basically left the lower portion of the intake sitting off to the side. This allowed us to not worry about the ridiculous wiring going through the middle of the intake and allowed us good access to the fuel filter and related sensors going into the top portion of the block.

Hope this helps.

I think it would have been cool to get it off as one, but I am glad it is in two. Easier to clean and replace parts with the intake split.

Roger that. I think the main thing is avoiding having to undo and mess with the wiring harness, which seems to be a pretty big PITA. If you can get around that without it creating other problems, then I was thinking maybe that's a better way to go.
