Hello, again,

I've been reading and lurking and asking some questions from PA for the past couple months and just got home yesterday from Colorado with our 1995 FZJ80! We flew out, bought the truck, visited Slee, spent a few days in Estes Park, and then drove home. The info I found here helped a lot in looking for a truck and I know will continue to help as I start going OCD on baselining and PM. I plan to keep this rig for a long, long time for road trips, camping, mtn bike races, and, of course, wheeling!

Bought with 114K and change, now just over 116,000 . . .

It already has the 2.5" OME kit with 850s and 863s,
Slee step sliders,
ARB (winch will be later),
drawers,
and a rack.

Next up will be a lot of mechanical work before any more goodies. Like a front axle service, tune up, diff and transfer fluids, starter contacts, and whatever else I find to give peace of mind.

Brett

Pics!
First is outside the hotel the morning after we bought it
Second is in front of Slee (duh)
Third is getting schooled by Christo

Really nice rig, but holy cow... from axle service NOW!

That looks like the front axle on my FJ60. Do something now before it causes more problem!

Stick Longfields in while the front end is apart!

Nice colour, by the way :D

Longfields aren't necessarily a better option. Yeah, they are less prone to breaking, but they are "softer" and are made to flex instead of snap. Due to the fact they are softer, the lifespan on Longfields is shorter than OEM birfs.

So, it all depends on how you plan on using the 80.

More hardcore wheeling? Get the Bobby Longs.
More street driving and less-than-hardcore wheeling? Get OEM (if needed).

My $.02.

Welcome back. Nice toy. I trust you will tell us about your trip and show your rig at the meeting at the end of this month at ABC. Will be nice to meet you and see your toy.

So the longfields will last 2-3 repacks instead of 3-4. They're half the price of OEM.

YMMV

Gee and you didn't even tell them the best part.

So did I sell your wife on the ARB Bumper? Looks like you took my advice on the rear springs and went with 863's.

Nice to have you on board

Love the black stock rims. Are they powder-coated or painted? I feel a rattle-can in my future......

Welcome!:flipoff2:

Nice rig, & great color!

Congrats. Is it locked? The rear looks almost like it's got 3" or more of lift in that first pic.

I think I know that rig; it was for sale on this board, rightg? it was on my short-list. Had a knowledgable and apparently careful owner.

Good pick!

Hey, Romer--gee, the best part must have been meeting you at Rockbottom. Did you clean the drool off your truck yet? :D Actually, sorry--the best part was my wife's birthday in Estes Park! And, yes, we did opt for the ARB. Which was good, because :princess: tried to hit an elk on Saturday night. Weird--I bet you planted him there.

Concerning the 863s--I showed Christo the drawers and they tried Mediums to start and then, after seeing how it sat, Christo did some mental recalculation on the weight of the drawer system and, based on how much gear we plan to haul in it, we swapped up to 863s. Yes, you were right!

Jenny Cruiser--yep, it is locked and has the Million Dollar Switch.

Iron Yuppy--Yes, it was for sale on this board. The wheels were blasted and then painted. We flew out to Denver and the seller met us at the airport with the truck.

Thanks, everyone! Can't wait to start getting my hands dirty! :flipoff2:

I want to know more about this home brew roof rack. I need somthing like that is flat so I can fit in the garage still.

According to the PO, it's based on the infamous J-Moose by Wild Yoats, with a few changes. Here's the original write up:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=59928&highlight=jmoose

The PO used the ATV ramp idea for the platform but then used Yakima raingutter towers and crossbars for the rack to sit on so he could mount bike trays on the sides--I like this because I bike, too. He also added a few tie-downs to the rack. Oh yeah--this truck had no factory rack to deal with (nice!).

If the planets are in alignment, we'll be there! Looking forward to it.

More post padding!

Dang, too many things to respond to. To answer everyone's concern about that nasty knuckle--YES, front axle rebuild is very, very high on my list--like one of the first things. If I know me (and I hope I kinda do by now), I'll opt for OCD on this because I have no assurance that the axle was ever serviced, ever. Yes, it clicks. I'm thinking of replacing the birfields and maybe an inner axle if it's worn/grooved. Why? If I have it apart, I plan to make sure I'm not wondering about it when it's back together. Yes, I plan to replace most everything in it. Yes, I plan to replace the rotors and put on 100-series pads. Yes, I plan to own this truck for a long, long time.

Does anyone advocate replacing birfs versus swapping sides if one is clicking?

CDan's dogs best be hungry . . . looks like my first order might be a doozy.

I gotta find that thread again with the three levels of parts costs for an axle rebuild.
