I'm having a guy make me an underbed gas tank for my '40.

Anyone that's done this know a source for a filler neck with a rollover valve in it? ...Either new or donor vehicles at the boneyard.

Or is there a another way that's better/easier (cap w/ valve or something)?

Thanks. -Ed '70FJ40

PS--here's my tank mock-up in cardboard; he will use stainless, which should keep the fuel on the inside a little better...

In vehicle (from above, bed floor is removed)...

...plan is for the filler neck to go between the frame and body (in the bump-out on the right).

My RCI fuel cell has a regular filler with no one way valve but I do have a roll over one way vent on the cell that is seperate from the filler. Both parts can be sourced from Summit Racing or any other place that sells fuel cells and supplies.

I am also going to mock up a tank to go under the bed in the rear as I have decided the fuel cell in the rear bed area takes up too much cargo room. I will enjoy following your buildup, especially how you end up mounting the thing.

Thanks for the response. The one-way vent valve doesn't sound like a bad way to go; I'd just have to find an unvented filller cap that fits.

The fill necks/valves/plates I've seen so far are large diameter for racing apps, but I plan to use smaller filler hose (1-1/2 or 1-5/8") to sneak it between the frame & body.

Thanks. One more question. Downey was 86 bills for the unvented filler... a bit high I thought (since I'd still need a rollover vent valve, and... Oh it's bright red  ). I may need to just buck up cuz I'm running out of time, and I still haven't found any other sources for 2" filler necks. OTOH...

If I found an unvented cap for it, could I use my cruiser filler (the fender mount part) along w/ a rollover vent valve? Anyone know if there exists such a beast (unvented cap that will seal well on either a '70 or a '78 FJ40)?

The cap that was on my '70 when I got it seeped fuel when off-camber.

Thanks. -Ed '70FJ40

ps--is it SLOW today for everyone? Also if anyone needs an aux tank I ran across this; no affil.

I only have about 2.25" between the frame & body. I could clearance the body some, but I'd still rather a smaller one so I have more space to prevent rubbing/chafing. So I'd prefer to find 2" or even less.

In fact, I am considering wrapping the filer hose in something (maybe a larger hose) where it passes thru there. Hey--it's combustible: I'd rather err on the side of caution!

I do appreciate the input, though: if I don't find a smaller one I'll use the Jaz one... though I will want to confirm that their vented cap seals the gas inside (i.e., has a rollover valve).

BTW--Do you guys have anything to protect the filler hose from stuff kicked up by the tire? I'm thinking either a mud flap, or a metal plate.

Help!

So I took my cruiser out to get the tank installed this weekend. The guy had it built except for the top, which we agreed to wait until after test fits... WELL HE BUILT IT BACKWARDS! WTF!!!

He flipped the bottom piece & built from the bottom up: a backwards "L" (bump-out on L where exhaust lives).

The only reason I started down this underbed tank avenue is because this same guy built my rollcage, but screwed that up. The resolution included building me an underbed tank at cost of materials (so he could move the seats down as you'll see below).

I will list out the other things I'm disappointed with to give the whole story, 'cause I want some opinions on how to proceed...

1 - We agreed he'd build the seats into the cage, but he built these tall brackets that bolt to nuts welded into the sheet metal of the tub.
2 - the seats are so high I bump my temple on the spreader bar (along the door frame).
3 - whimpy 1/8" for plates to bolt the cage to the body (frame tie-ins I was planning on doing myself later).
4 - the rolled beads on the tub were crushed/bent flat when tightening plates.
5 - put the shoulder harness bar behind the seats so close you can't use the seat sliders anyway (also: I'm not using harnesses if seats are bolted to body!).
6 - didn't put the agreed-on multiple bends around the dash so my big boots can fit in and out easier (I know--this one's no big deal, but I paid for it).
7 - gas tank backwards (as previously mentioned)

My gut tells me to cut my losses and go and get my cruiser back before I REALLY regret it... but I'm into him for over $1k w/ the cage, and I won't have $ to redo this (or possibly even fix it) for a VERY long time. I wanted to give him the chance to make things right... he does keep claiming he will make things right, and keeps trying. He is a seemingly (well, otherwise) talented kid with a decent reputation in the racing community.

OTOH, things obviously aren't going too well. Seven items awaiting resolution. Maybe it's me, but this is why I generally do my own work: anytime I pay someone else it's always a battle and I regret it.

What do you guys think? I know what I will probably do; I just want some opinions from others who aren't wrapped-up in the saga.

I wish I'd gone metaltech...
I wish I'd gone metaltech...
I wish I'd gone metaltech...
Now tap my heels together...
And do it myself, right?

Oh, I should have said... he plans to cut the bump-out off & weld it to the other side.

Where we left it is: I said I don't like it but don't really have a choice do I, so do it then call me to come up before he does ANYTHING else.

I still wanna go save my baby, but OTOH don't want to stick the kid for $300 in materials plus his time, and also end up w/ zero of my seven items resolved.

It was his mistake and he should make it right at no cost to you. That is one of the costs of doing business when you make a mistake.

Since you are already 1k in the hole with this guy I would try to solve all your complaints and concerns with him before bailing.

It is these stories why it does not seem like such a crazy idea to me to buy the very expensive specialty tool (TIG machine) and do the work myself. No one to blame but yourself if it does not turn out correctly.

I wish you the best of luck!

i cannot friggin believe he built it upside-down. this dude is a douche, ed. where the hell did you find him, so i stay outta there!

Zimm I have a henrob and you will need alot of time to practice with it.
Ed I WOULD NOT GIVE THE GUY ANOTHER DIME UNTIL YOU ARE HAPPY WITH WHAT HE HAS DONE!
