^ Not sure about how a winch is mounted on an ARB bumper but my former TJM had a separate winch cradle that mounted between the frame rails and not directly to the bumper.

To date I've not seen an ARB bumper with any real recovery point supplied. The Deluxe bumper from ARB IIRC had a couple thin (4mm thick?) brackets, if you will, on the lower edge of the bumper...but they get deformed easily and therefore not really up to the task of full-on recovery events.

Reading this thread, thinking about the still plastic wrapped 03+ ARB in the garage. I would swear that there are two little shackle mounts hanging from the underside. Are they not designed to be used?

I must be missing something , the bumpers are designed to hold a winch.

What am I missing?

The newer one that you have (with the foglight inserts) can be recovered from. The one for 98-02 uses a bumper mounting bracket the winch bolts to before the crush zone. The winch does not actually mount to the bumper on the older ones. You have the one I should have bought and just done the trimming.

The 03+ bull bar bumper has no cradle. The winch mounts feet first to the face of the actual bumper. In other words the winch mount/cradle is built into the face of the bumper.

I'm pretty sure I know what you are thinking about, and those are part of the bolt mounts for the actual bumper to the included frame mounts. When you get around to installing it you will figure it out real fast. Also pull the directions and take a look.

So...does this bumper have the crumble zone style mount?

Guys, maybe i am doing something bad, but I have three recovery points on my bumper. Two are tabs, and the other is the factory tow hook. Tow hook clearance is not good. FYI, Winch is well behind air bug crumple zone.

I will say- that I find it very difficult to buy stuff based on limited/poor pictures. When I decided to buy a 100 rather than fix the headgasket in my 80. I decided to just bite the bullet and get bumpers ASAP, I am not a big "fan"of ARB bumpers. As a matter of fact, I really like the tube prerunner style bumpers.

I will take some pics of this thing if you guys want to see the brackets and what not (not today)

Looks like you put your recovery points on backwards. They are actually not recovery points at all if those are the stock ones. They are intended to be tie down points and nothing more so use with caution.

Correct, had to flip in order to gain clearance to use as an attachment point.

FYI, the tie down tabs appeared to be similar in strength to the tabs on the older ARB. I've seen those tabs used as attachment points many times. See shackles in pic below ( not greatest, but I don't have many picsf my old troop).

Just saw this thread... I know the pictures bad but which ARB do I have on my 2000?... it was put on in 05 and I just got the truck this year.
It does have some shackles hanging down I have never inspected them to see if they are good recovery points... it has the accordion airbag friendly setup....

Looks like a Sahara.

New Australian safety standards called for bull bars with smooth surfaces, among other things. I think it is still possible to design recessed recovery points but perhaps it adds too much to the cost.

However, in recent years, rumor has it the mining industry had been pushing for rated recovery points and so ARB has started to produce them.... but mostly for trucks that are common to the mining industry.

And they will cost you an arm and a leg.
From memory AUD 250, each.

The short answer is "I don't."

I made the mistake of buying the airbag-friendly version that isn't made to recover from. One of these days I will probably buy dan's bracket. For a while I was planning on welding my own shackle mount to the bracket that holds the winch and bumper.

For the time being, if I need to recover from the front, I pretty much need to count on my winch.

The TJM T13 is airbag approved, and while installing it the other day, I realized it includes a couple of recovery points too.
