Has anyone every fabbed out a Rear Tire Rack from a 4Runner or a Pathfinder, Blazer, Bronco, . . . . .
I have seen them on vehicles at "you picks".
Have tools, will pick!

I got lucky years ago to find one from a Bronco in the woods, it worked on my Blazer . . . . an American thing!

The single largest complaint that the Forest Service had with the FSB's that they bought was the spare tire carriers.

Bolting something heavy to sheet metal w/o proper and extensive reinforcement is not a good idea.

I have seen a few threads in the past that have asked this same question. I have never seen one done this way. It is certainly possible, but I suspect it might take so many hours to retrofit that the time would be better spent beginning from scratch and going totally custom. As ntsqd says, the reinforcing would be a stumble block; it would take a lot of effort to properly reinforce the quarter.

My impressions of the factory tire racks is that they are not robust enough for the larger tires that most guys have on their 60-series waggies. Also, many guys here like to have a tire rack, and a jerry can holder, and a hi-lift jack holder, and a trailer hitch; some like to have double swing-outs as well.

My opinion? Look at some of the manufactured units (Slee has a nice one) or have one custom made. There are reasons why no one (or not many folks) has done what you are asking about.
 
I did it with a pathfinder swingout, not done yet. Re-inforced the quarters with some corners off my donor rig, tac welded on the inside of the quarters, 7 bolts and 2.5" washers, also supported by two supports bolted onto the tailgate, I use a ratchets strap to pull it tight against the tailgate as well providing a lot of relief off the bolts.
I have a 34" swamper on it, and I (215#) can swing on it without any deflection. I think the real test if going to be bouncing it in the rocks, a lot more G's built up there than on the street.

Bad cell phone pic, this is mocked up to where I want to relocated the backing plate for the spare. All said and done probably not gonna be worth it and might even resort back to a swingout bumper. I cut out my rear crossmember and recessed my tow hitch so I needed to find a place for my spare and was curious to do something different. Not for everyone, but possible.
