Hello all, first time LC owner here, but a long time Yota fan. I have a '91 LC with the all-time AWD, and have been weighing options on locking diffs for it. I'll be frank, my budget can't justify options like a $900+ Air Locker for the front, and I have had excellent results with both Aussie...
Heya,
So, I know this post is pushing a solid 9 years old now, but I don't know if this question ever got answered for you, but as someone who has ran front/rear lunchbox lockers I thought I could give a more in-depth answer.
The short of it is front/rear lunchbox lockers can absolutely work...
Believe it or not, I've put close to 500 miles on it since then. Its beauty is on the inside, not the outside, to be sure. I daily drive between 40 and 50 miles to work 5 days a week. Not a whole lot of time to get work done on it, though.
Victory!
The (ONLY) local wrecker just happens to have a 1980 long bed, with intact doors, bed, front fenders, dash, and wiring harness. I asked him how much straight up if I did all the work myself.
$250 for everything!!
I even negotiated bringing in my old chopped up parts to give back in...
The goal is for something ultra-cool under the hood.
Also, after some digging, and stripping the entire passenger side of the bed I've decided.
It's time for a new bed.
The bondo patch job between the sausage bumper and the bed didn't seal very well, and the rust was starting to creep into...
If there is a hell, the walls are lined with Rhino Lining. Let this be a PSA for anyone considering coating their truck in it, it's like a tattoo. You better be damn sure it's what you want, because going back on your choice is absurdly difficult.
Here's what the other side looks like, though, almost as if they intentionally punched holes there so they could clear the adjustment nuts? Or, more likely just overlooked the height of the shocks.
Gotta admire the nice hack welding job. Bit confused, was this done so as to put in a longer shock, but retain stock ride height? Or did they break off the strut mount?
Probably the newest two things on this truck, a nice W55 5 Speed and 1-B T-Case combo.
Jesus take the wheel, this cab...
First of two major issues: Leaky Accelerator Pump Diaphragm. $12 online, quick and easy fix, no more leaking fuel or sputtering on gear changes! Also note the lack of electric choke for now, definitely need to get that back on once it starts cooling down more.
Second, and harder, of the two...
I'd be lying if I said the grille hasn't grown on me. It definitely draws some comments.
Local wrecker has a few Gen 1 Pickups in there, gonna grab a new fuse box from one, new doors, probably, and a set of front fenders. If he'll let me get in there with the cutting wheel, I'll come out with...
So, the 1st Gen purists here might want to stop reading, as this is borderline gore for them. I've been searching for a super cheap, running 1st Gen pickup for some time, wanting that factory 4x4 8" solid axle goodness, and a decent platform to turn into a blown SBC minitruck monster. Since I've...
Update on the old girl, finally put a WRX STI Top mount and matching scoop on her, and a little fender and rust trimming for added clearance. The tires pictured are 36x12.5 TSL SX's. Flares to cover them are a work in progress.
Hey Guys!
This thread might get vilified by some, but for others it might be a godsend, but I wanted to do a quick and simple write-up on how to completely bypass the dreaded rear window relay on the Surfs.
-WARNING, WHEN WORKING WITH ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERIES TO KEEP...
Hey guys, New to the forum here, first Toyota I've owned and worked on, loving it though.
1993 Hilux Surf, 2L-TE 2.4 Turbo Diesel, RHD
First thing was a 3-in-1 combo Pyrometer, Boost, and Trans Temp gauge
Aussie Locker in the rear, stock IFS front with jubilee clip holding the ADD closed

Will it work? Can't be too hard to rearrange the wiring, splice together the sensor for my 4WD light, delete the 4X4 ECU, maybe trim the floor a bit to fit the new shift lever. I would much prefer the all mechanical chain driven transfer from the V6 Surfs to the electrical complications in the...
