    16" Rim Back Spacing?

I have a 78 FJ40 with stock front axle and a Monte Carlo rear disk conversion. When I did this conversion I had to grind the caliper casting to get clearance with my American Racing 15" Alloy rims. I intend to go from 15" rims to 16" rims. From what I have read a back spacing of 3.5" is...

    BVSV Bimetal Valve Thread Size

Does anyone know what the thread size is for the BVSV valves in the lower thermostat housing for a '78 FJ40?. It appears to be 3/8-19 BSPT.

After 27 years my 40 failed emission testing

I've owned my 8/78 FJ40 for 27 years and it has passed emission testing every year. Most of the time it has been below the max allowed by over 50%. Last week I went for the yearly test and was flabbergasted by the Hydrocarbon value - 605ppm (say WHAT!!!). In Arizona the allowable limit is...

    Fuel Sending Gasket

I don't have one to measure and need the following to see if the aftermarket fuel sender I want to use will mount without modifications to the tank. I need the ID, OD and bolt circle diameter of the sealing gasket. If someone has one they can measure and could post the values, I would be...

    Oil Pans

I did a search and could not find the info I was looking for. Will the 3F oil pan, P/N 12101-61030 work on a 78 to 87 2F without modifications, or should I just order the 12101-61013 oil pan that is listed for the 2F through '87? The reason I'm interested in the later oil pan is the horizontal...

    Motor Mounts

I bought an engine out of an '87 FJ60 as a spare engine for my '78 FJ40. I noticed that the motor mounts are larger than the ones in my '78. Are the larger motor mounts the ones I should use and are there any issues with installing them on my '78 frame. I plan on using the right and left...

    '87 Replacement Engine

Hi there. I'm an owner of a '78 FJ40 and just bought this engine out of an '87 FJ60. If you could shed any additional info about the engine block codes and manifold bolt pattern, I would be mighty appreciative. My apologies in advance as I do not know how to have the 40 forum thread post in...

    Engine Identification

Can any one tell me what these markings represent. This is on an engine that came out of an 87 FJ60. The serial number block is only stamped 2F. The manifold side of the head has an addition half dozen or so smaller tapped holes that are not used by the intake/exhaust manifold I pulled off.

Hillbilly Guide to Lifts and Steering

I know this was posted sometime back, but it is 11 pages of must reading of how not to design your custom lift, suspension or steering linkage. Scary Steering

    Vapor Recovery Tank, Replacement

I've had to replace two of these tanks because the tube on the plastic tank cracked over time due to vibration or whatever. I decided that this time I would see if an Aluminum recovery tank could be used. All the Aluminum fabricators that I talked with said their standard tank was made from 3"...

    Hydraulic Shop Press

I'm in the process of rebuilding a couple of smog pumps and decided to get a press. If I'm going to buy a press, then I want one that will support rebuilding my stock tranny and transfer case. To those of you with experience rebuild theses items is this unit from Harbor freight going to meet...

    High Temperature Sealed Pilot Bearing

The couple of times I've changed my clutch, I have found that the shielded 6202bearing used as a pilot bearing has been in sad shape and needed replacing every time. What I noticed the most is the degradation which appeared to be due to a loss of grease in the bearing and dirt. This loss of...

Toyota Pulleys on GM PS pumps

Here are two ideas for those that want to run the stock Toyota belt on their GM Power Steering pumps with 3/4" press on shafts. The first solution I've posted photos of. It is a Toyota Power Steering pulley that had a keyed hub. The hub is welded to the pulley and is easily removed with a...

    2F Redline

Folks, I've looked for this and well I do not seem to be able to find it. What is the factory redline for a stock 2F (8/78) and what redline can you safely expect in a rebuild that uses high performance parts and has all the rotational components balanced. This would also include an upgraded...

    Builds  ROTW My Yoda

The very first time I saw an FJ40 it was love at first sight. It just made a Jeep look like a toy. The axles, the width of the springs – man this was some kind of stout. I was living in Pacific Grove CA and you just did not see them for sale. I moved to southern AZ in 84 and was in Bisbee AZ...

    Intake Manifold Heater

Well, I'll start this and it can serve to get me motivated to develop the documentation. I'm also very interested in feedback from all of you. I've designed a manifold heater that will improve cold weather starts and idle which equates to lower emissions. Here are two photos of the...

Tranny to Transfer case bypass hose

I've had a couple of request to give more detail on this setup. The hose is a steel braided -08 Parker "Tough Cover". The centerline distance between the fittings is 15" to 15.25". I made two, and they both fit. The short one is currently in place. The fittings are 37 Deg Flared Compression...
