    Exhaust in cabin. Ugh.

The frame is rock solid. This is no Tacoma. But every time I get under my Cruiser and turn a wrench, I cry a little. Partly because I’m sad about the rust I can see destroying my beloved 80, and partly because of the rust bits that have fallen in my eyes from any form of agitation on the truck.

    Exhaust in cabin. Ugh.

I did - my 80 has been a Minnesota daily driver for most of its life. The salty winter roads have taken a toll on the body. Big, gaping rust holes right above the exhaust outlet on the passenger side were sucking in fumes. I solved the problem with some poorly attached sheet metal, and silicon...

Looking for exhaust parts source - any recommendations?

I ended up ordering the downpipe with cat, and the secondary cat from Magnaflow. I have the cat back set from Borla “hopefully” on the way. It’s been a few weeks now. The shipper says it will still be a while. Both of the Magnaflow cats came with gaskets. I plan to get stainless hardware from...

Looking for exhaust parts source - any recommendations?

Unfortunately, I have zero welding or bending skills (or tools). I can hold my own turning a wrench, but not with a welder. Maybe it's time to learn...

Looking for exhaust parts source - any recommendations?

Living in the rust belt, my ‘96 80 is slowly going back to the earth. The exhaust system included. Getting under the rig and shaking the exhaust pipes, I can clearly see the pipe below the manifold is toast. Then it gets to the cats, more rust breakage. The O2 sensor is held on by a hose clamp...

    Help Diagnosing Knocking Noise

I need to swap out my radiator. The new unit arrived today. Maybe I’ll remove the fan shroud temporarily as a test.

    Help Diagnosing Knocking Noise

The thing is though that the knock definitely has the same frequency as the engine RPM. So not likely anything at the hub.

    80 Series Sliders Suggestions

+1 for Mike at Bump it Off-road. I have the step sliders and have put them to the test over and over on big rocks. They take a beating, and make it easy for my wife and kids to climb into the 80. Also, looks mostly stock, if that’s a concern.

    Help Diagnosing Knocking Noise

Hopefully not rod knock. But I’m an amateur, I’m open to opinions. Here’s the strange thing. This knock seems to happen only when turning to the right. The knock frequency is directly linked to engine speed. I can’t replicate the sound at idle or when the rig is NOT in motion. Only when I’m...

    Weirdest modifications on a 40

I’m not sure this would qualify as weird, but I’m not sure I’d be willing to sit under those beams.

    Our 1976 FJ40 - "Tonto"

Reading these pages and watching that excellent bonus vid were FAR mor exciting and interesting than anything I could have binge watched on Netflix! This was so great. The scenery you’ve tracked down is EXACTLY why an FJ40 first appealed to me all those years ago. Thanks for documenting and...

Rear Diff Lock Testing … Let’s Start with the Basics

Is there a way to manually engage the rear diff lock short term? I could see just leaving it on all weekend during a wheeling trip, then disengage and buy me time to do the fix properly later.

Rear Diff Lock Testing … Let’s Start with the Basics

Bummer about the high likelihood of it being the motor. I guess wheeling with an open rear diff isn’t the worst thing in the world. At least until I can find some time to tear it apart and prove Toyota wrong about not servicing it.
