The original Radio Slot in my 75 FJ40 just has a blank. Any recommendations for mounting a Ham radio in that space? Was thinking I could mount the entire radio or install the radio remotely and just the faceplate in the dash. Also need a spot for the Mic. Anyone else done this?

Might be a good idea. Good luck and I'll be watching this thread.

That space is awfully small for a ham radio. I don't know of any face plates that are small enough to fit in between the plastic pieces on the lower dash either. Sorry!

The FT-2800/2900 fits perfectly in the hole. I would plan to add a cooling fan since it will be closed in.

Should be wide open up under the dash so no additional cooling should be necessary... no?

I was thinking the same thing. Would not worry about cooling there.

Huh? The heater is right under the radio slot.
Plus the firewall is inches away from the back of the radio, where all the heat sink fins are.

But with air flow all around... Very different from, say, an FJ60 radio slot.
Even so it gets friggin hot under the FJ40 dash, been under there a after running on the trail for a few hours.
