I got to thinking today about surf and turf at Pismo beach. As someone who just last year moved here from Cali I kick myself at not being able to go to this event. So I was thinking why don't we get TLCA to sanction an east coast event at the outer banks??? It seems to make sense and i'm sure tons of people from the surrounding states would be down for it also. What does everyone here think??

That sounds like a good idea. Like you said get TLCA to sanction it and maybe ONSC could host it?

I agree and like the idea of the event, however we as a club have to get things finished up with becoming a charter club with TLCA prior asking for hosting a sanctioned club event. We are also going to need someone to step up to the plate and represent ONSC as the ONSC-TLCA Delegate.

My future hope are that we can carry out an idea like this as a club in the near future, great idea and let's continue to gather thoughts for this type of event.

I like the idea and think it would be a great idea to propose once we have finished setting ONSC up and have officers in place. Having TLCA backing us could definately help our cause; however I am a little skeptical of the governing agency cooperating. Mostly because the tides are changing so to speak down there as to auto access and they just lack the west coast mentality just as much as we lack the available open space. However, that being said, lets get ourselves in order and give it a try :)

Great idea.

Couple of things you might want to do.

Get non profit status. Discuss the event with the National Park Service and see if they even allow clubs to host events out there and if they charge a fee or % of profits.

Find out the best non intrusive place. Find an area where everyone can come that is in one central location.

I think it could be done easily. Doesn't have to be huge at first, grow it. You have the best location on this side of the US for this kind of thing. People will come.

I'm doing GSMTR this year so after the event I'll have all kinds of knowledge about how to pull something like this off. Would be more than glad to help in any way I can.

Non-profit status has been established and in place for about a year now, so that's one item we can check off the list. Brian one of our members keeps close tabs on the shore usage and access on a regular basis I believe so we can check with him on that, but first and foremost we need to get the officers in place for this to all come together.

I've contacted NPS, and I should have some information soon. My wife is a parks and rec major, and works with that circle of people so she might be able to be of some assistance also. Consider it done....

what would be the best time to try and plan something like this? summer, fall?

Early Fall or early spring, I would stay away from the summer months for not only the tourism but also the skeeters, real bad that time of year. Our last trip was in March and the weather was almost perfect.

Late spring/ Summer also runs into two other problems: ORV restrictions due to migratory waterfowl and space restrictions due to migratory humans.. :)

If you want to surf (as the Surf N' Turf) implies, than fall (September) works best as the water is still in the 70's... but you're from Cali so that won't be a problem...

I think this is a cool idea - sounds like we have some more business stuff as a club, but I see stuff like this in our future.

Greg - maybe the weather was nice for you in March, but from what I remember it was pretty horrid and cold (though yall had nicer weather the day before).

I'll throw in my .02 and vote for Sept.

Your not kidding. I grew up surfing in Santa Cruz CA and we rarely had water temps above 50 F but that keeps the sharks happy also...

After browsing through the Park Rules and website, I've come up with this, and I'll call the park superintendent after I get some ideas from everyone.

We could start this as a club event, and as it grows (adding Upstate and Bay to Blue Clubs) then possibly add the TLCA status?

Park special permits are issued by the Superintendent for specific areas. I could not find a map, but this I will discuss this with him or the special use officer. Fees for special permits are between $100 and $500, more if park staff is needed for clean-up and the such. And park regulations do state (and someone brought this up our last trip) that any ORV is held to the same rules as On road vehicles...

What I would like to know before I call and get info is what kind of activities would we want to plan that would require the permit? I'm not familiar with the Surf and Turf meeting, so I'm not sure what to tell him we'll be doing? Meeting on the beach (of course)? Night Drive? Surfing? Fishing? Contests? Camping of course is not allowed on the beach itself, but all night fishing trips are!

Let me know....

Hmmm I didn't know that camping on the beach isn't allowed.... that sucks.
As for what they do at surf and turf.... I think they have a cook off and that might be the only actual event there. (not many people actually surf out there.... a few will but Pismo isn't the best surfing location in the area by far. Other than that from what i'm told most people just go riding through the dunes. Oceano Dunes isn't that nearly the size of the outer banks so you are always near someone if you need help. I'd say have different rides through different parts, a cook off, a raffle... and anything else that is possible.
Where do you camp out there then if not on the beach??

There are several campgrounds along the pamlico that have incredible views, I have a spot that is very willing to accomodate a club as they did last year in our OBX trip in Friscoe would be gald to contact them again regarding that option.

maybe the tour de banx ? start a convoy out at one end and take to the other. Or as not to be complicated by traffic, set pm destinations and let groups wander and play along the way to the group meet up spot. Of course wed have to deal w/ the ferry if we passed that far. Group reservation maybe? but im thinking the numbers may be too many (in time)

Meanwhile I'm planning to spend a few days through there between 20 Dec and 3 Jan.
I didn't know camping was verboten, is it not like at Carolina beach?
So if anyone wants to meet up PM me.
And if anyone has info on camping Near the beach 4wd areas please let me know.
Thanks

Bill - We'll be there from Dec. 27th - Jan 3rd, you should swing by our place if it is convenient for you.

As far as camping goes, we like the area near the Billy Mitchell airport in Frisco that is on the back side of the dunes. Very cool topography right there and you can actually get some privacy in certain spots due to the varied terrain. An access ramp borders the camping area.

EDIT - Reading that link, it appears it may not be open year round. Anyway, shoot me a PM if you want to plan to meet up.
