I am trying to work the same thing exactly matter of fact...kind of an expedition and camping outing with first night on mainland...and then next one or two nights out on the banks with primitive camping...
Trail Team did one this past August and trying to get them involved again or to get some LESSONS LEARNED from them to set it up myself for next Fall.

Brick that would be great. Looking now like I'll be from just after Christmas until just after New Years.
Probably spend Christmas and the week preceding in Va Beach. But could run down to the upper banks during that time for coordination.
Any scouting you want to do for an upcoming group trip I'm willing.

I will get with you Bill....I am in process of trying to get some info from Trail Team that went there this year......no since recreating the wheel twice if it worked...and they sifted through the regulations and pitfalls.
I will let you know what I find out.... Other option is Carolina Beach but not as remote as island in OBX that you need to take ferry over to get to for a night or two.

Carolina Beach won't work unless at the end of Christmas week. I'll be coming from a Va Beach Christmas visit to my baby bruddah and his yacht flotilla.

Portsmouth island does allow camping on the beach. Been there, done that. Pretty sweet if the mosquitoes aren't biting. The ferry must be booked in advance and it does cost money though. It would be sweet to see a ferry full of cruisers.
Barry points out a good alternative to the OBX site. Seems they are a little less restricted compared to the recent goings-on at Hatteras, allow camping and fires on the beach, will probably be less crowded (not that we had that problem in March last year). Extra gas cans will be a must probably...

Yeah I know it wont be an easy one to throw together without some planning.....i was hoping we could have it worked out and planned. I was shooting for a FALL 09 outing....but your SPRING seems better. Just dont know if there is time for that....
I spoke to Bill Wright about the OBX thing....we will all get our info together soon and see what is possible.
Apologize for jumping into this thread when I am from Lowcountry Land Cruisers (sub of Upstate) but figured we could all help eachother and make it a nice event even if it is only once or bi-annually due to distance and magnitude of organizing one of this size.
