There was another reason for recessing the bolt head. It's hard to describe, but essentially, they had to double the metal in that spot to accommodate the design of the factory mount.

Do not use a degreaser containing lye or other metal hydroxide on aluminum! These ingredients will eat/react with your nice aluminum parts. UGLY! These wheels were purchased this way. Good deal on the Dunlop tires though.
