The auto transmission was a sucker .... swapped for a manual H55 and I'm already at 12.5l/100km much better. I even expect it will get better since the tank wasn't full when I did the change.

Are you losing coolant? If so I'd be pressure testing the cooling system, and I suspect it'd be closely followed by the cylinder head coming off.
If you're not losing coolant, I'd be doing a pre-emptive full cooling system rebuild - water pump...
The OE cork gasket and FIPG will work well, but you'll curse the gods if you ever have to remove it, again.
A good alternative technique is to use the Black RTV and the cork gasket, THIN smear on all sides, and just finger tight the whole thing...
dude thats not that bad. I normally use paper gasket lathered with Orange FIPG 00295-01281 on both sides, but this past time i did diffs i only used the FIPG alone and have had zero leaks

I like to shut off the fuel with the Edic fuel cut off valve, pull all four glow plugs then crank for ~ 20 seconds to purge the diesel. (In a shop it might leave oil stains on the ceiling) then do the psi test.
