Welcome from a fellow ‘72 owner.
Your disc brake front end may have come from a later 40. Sometime in the late 70s the gears went from 4.10 to 3.73 I believe. If you could find a used 4.10 third member, you could swap that in and be good to go...
Hi all,
I purchased my FJ40 over a decade ago and I am finally getting around to making it drive-able. A few years ago, I swapped the front axle from a donor fj40 that came with the driver so I could have disc brakes, but soon found out it may...
I know, seems like a common theme. Finally got the column out and the last 4 tub bolts. By the way, I am using your build as inspiration. I have followed your build and have many of the same rust issues with the tub. Thanks for all the great...
On the 72 you can’t separate the steering box from the column: it has to come out as one piece. I found that I had to remove the fender to get the assembly out, though the FSM suggests removing the carb and oil cleaner. Pick your poison I guess!
Well no one is buying this 40, so I’ll just keep working on it. I’ve started feeding it immunosuppressants so that it doesn’t reject the GM parts I’ve transplanted in over the past few days (you SBC swap guys know what I’m talking about 🤣) . In...
Got started in earnest on Monday and by last night had the t-case divorced from the transmission and stripped clean of all its bits and pieces. Cleaned some stuff and started a bit of reassembly.
I’m looking for an FSM for the earlier t-case if...
In the meantime, ill be dripping some of my "background quality" photos over the next month or so while this repair occurs. If anyone wants the full quality shots just DM me. :)
A little update. About 9000 miles in the last year and nothing major. I had to replace the transfer case input seal and chased some speed wobble issues that turned out to be a wheel that had thrown its weight but nothing else serious.
Glad I...
Finally made some progress on getting the bench seat fully mounted. I've had the driver's side sorted for a while, but thanks to the fuel tank, the passenger side has been more of a challenge. But I think I finally got something fabbed up that...
If the 68 is like my 72, there’s a nut that’s welded to a heavier-gauge reinforcing plate that is spot welded to the underside of the floor panel. When I repaired that section of my tub, I more or less reproduced the stock setup:
I don't have any pics for this little update, but last night I decided to double-check the clutch adjustment, etc., as shifting is not always the smoothest on this truck. I also remembered that I'd never properly bled the clutch line, so I...

I made it to Vancouver early on Sunday then met up with my brother and got to his place in Coquitlam. He has two 1st gen Tacomas and a grey hdj81. The access cab 1st gen is SAS'd with a 80 diff, locked and has duals(it's...
