It was 10/81 with the door switch was added in some markets including the US. Seen Middle East FJ40 up to 84 that didn't have the door/off/on switch. So old style was used until the end of product in some markets.

@AVL KZJ78 nailed it. That is the 'INLET AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR', part# 89424-12010

Looks like the IAT sensor, plugs into grommet on the side of intake between filter housing and turbo.
