First things first.....gotta sort out the tires.
I buzzed down to 49Tire today and had them install some 285/75-16 Yokohama X-ATs.
Again, this thing drives fantastic. We are rearranging the suspension on this one when I start in on this...
OK. I did not burn it.
It cranked and drove. That's always a fear upon delivery.
Wesley gave me a white glove tour of his beachfront state park. Phenomenal. If you are in the area check out Camp Helen State Park
If you see this guy, hide...
In his defense, there was a lot of rust to fix and he is doing a great job, he is an experienced body guy. He also has other projects in the shop needing his attention. He replaced the rear quarters, wheel well tops, rear sill, front floors and...
So taking in the sunrise is a staple in my life. Trying to add the sunset next. This is 2 mins from the house. Ten zen minutes if you slow down to catch it.
Thank you.
A trip in an FJ40 is much more tiresome than a modern 4x4 in my opinion. Anything over 150-200 miles in a day is pretty tough. I think the sweet spot for a road trip would be 100 miles per day with a stop or two.
I’ll say this…the...
Awesome trip, and awesome storytelling.
What kind of distances do you average each day in an FJ40? I would suspect slightly less than a typical day in a modern 4x4?
From here, it was a cannonball run to find the next place to stay for the night. We left Atlantic City in the rain and headed south.
We were hoping to find a spot to camp in the totally unknown (at least to us) Granite Mountains, but the rain...
We found Atlantic City in a light rain and parked by a place called The Atlantic City Mercantile.
Robert Redford stated in The Outlaw Trail, "There is only one hub of activity in Atlantic City. It is the Mercantile, and combination bar and...
The next morning, it was time to get on the road and back to dirt.
So I'd read about a couple of cool ghost towns just on the south end of the Winds and Popo Agie. Atlantic City was one of these, and we really wanted to check it out.
Sure...
From Dubois we headed to Lander. This was an interesting drive, with the look of a mix of Utah desert and Colorado mountains.
Once in Lander, we needed to get our bearings on what to do next. I wanted to head west into the Popo Agie Wilderness...
So the burn ban which was now in place was very limiting. We learned that a Stage 1 ban in Wyoming means that fires are allowed only in developed campgrounds, which are not really our style. However, we found some good middle ground: these canvas...
We rolled into Pinedale around 3 PM that afternoon and were stopped in our tracks to our road to Green River Lakes. I had found a ridge top camp site on Google Earth with a two-track road going all the way to the top. We found out pretty fast...
The road up to Steamboat Mountain was very remote. It feels a lot like Big Bend around here.
Even though the winds were light down below, I had some concerns about it getting windy on the plateau. Sure enough, the winds kicked up right around...
A beautiful sunset met us as we found camp that night around 8PM. We grilled steaks over the fire and stayed up late with the usual shenanigans that one would expect.
Temps were chilly but not cold, and there was almost zero wind.
My family used to have a little place in the town of Ennis, Montana. We drove up there from Colorado quite a few times over the years, hastily traversing Wyoming on the way. For years I gazed at those mountain ranges across Wyoming and wanted to...
I was told the truck was running and driving, but I soon realized this was far from the truth. It ran terrible. I would get up to 10 mph and the carb would sputter, backfire, and buck the whole truck around the neighborhood. I could also see...
What started out as my teen daughter doing shirts for our 50 state Fj55 roadtrip evolved into trying to make some shirts for all the early and non common cruiser heads. There’s enough 40/60 stuff out there that it’s not a huge focus although we...
Drill / tap arrived, even with thin-wall PLA I was able to tighten the brass adapters without cracking the print. I’m happy with how it looks! I received all my 3d printing gear and the nylon filament as well, in the process of getting set up...
