Looks like you have a 1979 or newer disc brake conversion. Determining whether your rotors are vented or solid metal will helpf if you have to order brake parts.
I am running 3.70 diffs, an H41 transmission, and 33” tires, and can do 65 mph all day long. At about 2,500 rpm. It will do 75-80 if you really need to, but I don’t like to if I don’t have to.
Got the hard top back on. Had a hitch receiver cut into the factory rear bumper with some inner channel extra plating, along with a 7pin trailer harness and Anderson connector.
The big plus for the hard top was getting shoulder belts installed...
Had a little fun this morning. I decided a few weeks ago to start pulling out the MISCELLANEOUS boxes tucked into every corner of the shop. About once a year for the 27 years I had a front counter in the shop I would predictably get annoyed...
I think best is using stk Toyota FJ40 or FJ60 front brakes. You need donor parts from a 76 or later FJ40 or FJ60 along with the birfields, or find a complete donor front end. You can then get new rotors and new or rebuilt calipers along with...
Call Georg at Valley Hybrids, ask him to build you a kit using FJ60 knuckles and swap onto your existing axle housings. Youll be much happier than one of the kits that use Chevy junk.
@orangefj45
I decided to organize my ongoing project progress as a Build instead of scattering threads randomly across the tech section.
I’m going to have to pull a Star Wars … and start a bit after the middle. This is the story of Jolene, a 1968 FJ40 I...
I just did this on my fj40 and before I started I purchased new fill and drain plugs along with crush washers from Cruiser Teq. I needed an impact driver to loosen the drain plugs. If you’re changing the oil, you should make sure you have...
This probably belongs in the thread "FJ40 pics from back in the day". My 01/72, pic taken summer of '78 showing my headrests and my old girlfriend and my brother with his Harley.
It sounds like finding or making a proper hood prop might be easier. The benefit to a hood prop is having the option to tilt the hood against the windshield if you need more room to work. I always use a rag where they make contact.
No primer. Wanted to see if the bare metal would affect the color
It’s called Pluto Beige, with a paint code of 1352. I’ll share the name of the supplier after I have a chance to talk with them. Bottom line: I am satisfied with this 😊
1971 body and 1978 running gear, some folks do that on purpose. The real question as said a few times now is do you really like it and will you keep it or are you looking to turn it for a profit at some point. 30K will buy you another just as...
In my sincerest efforts to beat a dead horse....to death..lol.. Like others have said, your specific desires and long term goals are the biggest issue in any decision. My .02 is that it's a pretty serious frankenstein rig with mismatched years...
OP again - Thanks to everyone for the sincere feedback and advice here. I read every single one and really do appreciate the knowledge and value this community provides.
When I was initially looking for the FJ and found this one, I have to...
Meet Retro, a 1981 40 with 113k on the clock. While the body has several rusty spots the frame and motor are in great condition. Original 2F with all the smog still attached and starts and runs really well. For now I am just going to drive it...
Hello everybody!
Starting this thread to document my first FJ40. A little background on me: I am a 27 year old software engineer by trade. I have tinkered with electronics and mechanical objects for as long as I can remember and although I am...
