I’ve been accumulating some parts and after a move at the beginning of the year my new garage is ready for it’s first project. There isn’t anything LC related on YouTube or Mud that I’ve found, so I’ll try to document this as best as I can.

After unboxing and sorting through things, this is where I start.

I did not choose the front tube option, but am now thinking I’ll want one with the winch going in. Maybe a short stinger of some type.

My son and I built the Coastal bumper for his 3rd gen 4Runner. I insisted he order the stinger hoop, thinking I would add it to my TJM bumper if he didn’t want it. Guess where it ended up? I’m happy it’s on the 4runner, as he road trips the heck out of his truck and the added front end protection against deer and other critters is cheap.

The first half of the instructions goes over removal of OEM bumper, so I’ll skip that part since that’s already done. However, I do need to make a run for some random hardware outlined in the pic below.

I am currently building the rock sliders and skid plate; feel free to ask any questions on that process if you're curious.

So the basics of this kit are the part numbers go in the order of assembly. My next step was to number all part numbers and their duplicates. After that it’s time to put 1,2 &3 together. My welds are not the best I know, but here is where things are at the end of day one. Next step is to bolt this up to the frame rails. Once mounted proceed in part number order, tacking all pieces together. I watched a coastal build for a 4Runner on YouTube, and the big take away is to do as much welding with it mounted on the truck.

Steady as she goes. Bolted bottom plate to frame rails this evening and tacked pieces 4 (two side pieces) and piece 5 fairlead opening part. Overall impressions are it is fitting nice and tight.

The directions state to build one wing at a time, beveling the edges of pieces 7 & 8 to ensure strong welds and clean lines on the leading edge of the bumper. Getting top piece 7 in place for tack welds required two large 90's and one small 90 welding magnet.

So now it’s time to fit piece number 8 up with dem magnets….seriously you need a few handy for this. Once in place, drink some more beer, assure yourself things are going great. Hot damn, right side sorta looks like a bumper.

I bought the front and rear set for my sequoia. How long do you estimate the front is going to take?

Were you able to use any of your factory hardware when you took the bumper off? Did you still have to buy more anyways?

Well, I got rained out. Was hoping to get 11-13 in place tonight, but that will have to wait until morning. Some things sliding around on my smooth brain at the moment:

- bottom plate had holes pre-drilled and serves as winch plate, no idea of the footprint on the HF Apex Winch.
- there are 4 3" cube light openings on bumper, need to start perusing HF, yeah I'm cheap like that.
- wiring of winch, I think there is some stuff to read up in the FAQ, for now it will be a single batter setup....i think, or Slee Tray? have to give that some thought
- need to look into local sandblaster and powder coater person
-tacked together with HF Titanium welder, need to see if BIL can let me use his Hobart w/ gas, he also has a nice welding table, may finish the bulk of welding that way

My intention is to be done with welding and grinding by end of the weekend, we'll see how it goes. Definitely didn't put a deadline on myself with this project, waited til kids were done with their school yr, etc. One of my limitations is the welder, it can only do some much welding per hour, it needs to cycle and recharge if you will. If I had to guess, I'd say the bumper will be somewhere in the ball park of 12-20 hours depending on skill experience and equipment to build.

I bought new hardware just in case. The rear lower bolts for bottom plate are not threaded all the way down the length of the bolt, which is why in the pics above that bolt is not tightened down all the way. So that will be replaced with new bolts. The #6 plate that bolts to the front of the frame horns, I used new bolts but quickly noticed they're not hardened steel. I did find the original bolts from when I removed the bumper, but they were rusty. I tossed those in a cup of vinegar last night and will use those for final install, much stronger bolts.
