1HD-T making ticking sound, help now!!! please

I am looking at a cruiser with a 1HD-T turbo diesel that is making a ticking sound. Hard to say if it is coming from the head or bottom end. Owner states the engine has sounded like that since he has had it.

The engine runs smooth and has good power.

Could it be the valves?

If it is a rod making the noise can it stay the same ticking for 1000 miles witout getting worse?

Post a sound file, here it's impossible but maybe on a site like YouTube...

From the seller's declaration it's unlikely the problem is from a bad connecting rod bearing. Valve or injector would seem more likely.

Loads of em tick, mine does, a lot claim it's the big end bearings but iv'e done mine, still does it, done the injectors, still does it, been like it for the last 18,000 miles, drives great so given up worrying. i have noticed a difference with different brands of oil, so maybe there's something in that.

The sound it's louder as the engine it's cold ?

the tick noise seems the same at cold and hot.

the noise is also louder under the engine, at the oil pan...make me think it is in the bottom end.

I am going to try to post a audio bite of the engine running

WTH is a 1HT?

we did some diagnostics with the engine running, cracked open and then closed the injector supply line one at a time from the front of the engine to the back. The last cylinder nearest the fire wall changed when cracked open, the ticking almost went away, a deffinate change in the sound.

here is a sound bite of the engine at running temperature

The first part is from under the engine and the second is form above near the valve cover drivers side

I appritiate the input guys let me know what you think

That clacking sounds like a undjusted (loose) valve to me... The difference from below and above is that above, you also hear the sound of the injectors more, and you can feel the sound of teh valve is also nearer... Have the valves been adjusted yet?

mmmm more than BEB it sound like a piston .. but are not good news and I could be wrong ..

I disagree... the sound is definitely coming from above, and besides a slapping piston would not last long with that sound...

Use a sthetoscope to locate its exact location, but the first thing you should do IMO is to remove the valve cover and check it for yourself!

HTH,
Chris

Maybe another soundbite at increasing RPM would help, but I still think it's excessive valve clearance on one valve... If it changes a lot it could be a bad valve spring...

Excessive Valve Clearance...

A slapping piston can last for a loooong time- years.
A noisy valve shouldn't change much with loading and unloading a specific cylinder. If the noise changes drastically when #6 is shut down it most likely has to do with that cylinder- not the valve train. ie.- injector, wrist(gudgeon) pin, piston or rod bearing- though the rod bearing is ruled out most likely if there is no change with RPM.

Wasn't this engine rebuilt recently? New pistons and wrist pins? New injectors?

Hmmm... Good point about the effects of cracking the line with the noise... We need a new sound file while cracking the line!

Exact same sound my 1hz Turbo made before we tore it apart.

Did the heads and swapped in new pistons only. Didn't really think the block was bad cause we couldn't see any wear in the cylinders.
Bad idea, the sound got louder and never went away till we redid the whole engine and sleeved the block and put in new pistons along with everything else. $$$$ ...

The engine had great power and ran good even with the noise. Ran it about 1000 kms before i got tired and took it apart.

According to the machine shop we use, many hz and hdt engines they work on make that noise when the cylinder walls wear abnormally and cause piston slap. It usually is only one or two cylinders that go bad. usually near the firewall.

The sound is very hard to locate. It sounded like the head, but it also sounded real loud near the crankcase. but it was definitely at the back of the engine.
