i looked in the faq and used the search but im just wondering how many bananas it is to do the front u joints? i have never done u joints and from what i have read it can be tricky. and whats all the talk and out of phase about?

thanks

I have never done joints on a 80. Others will chime in.

Here is a picture of what in-phase and out of phase looks like.

So is the front shaft in phase and the rear supposed to be out of phase?

The rear of the '80 and most other drive shafts are run in-phase. The front of some '80s came from the factory out of phase.

I did my rear for the first time last weekend. It isn't hard but make sure to mark the position of the grease nipple and such so you fit the new ones just like the last ones. It looks harder that it is.

Pushing out the original U-joints can be ugly, don't bend the yoke ears. I just zip cut the Ujoint cross and push the caps out after, way easier.

so im moving cross country and need to get a few things done. the ujoints i think ill end up having my mechanic do because im going to rebuild the knuckles and dont think ill have the time to do both. thanks for all the info

That would work perfect for you. Pull the drivelines, drop them off at the mechanic while you do the front end!

I have my front driveshaft out right now, waiting on my new u-joints to show up (thanks CDan!). Doesnt appear to be too hard...so it should only take me 4 days to install them. :D

The joint are not that difficult. Pay attention to how the grease nipples are placed before to take things apart. Always the pieces so you put them back in the same place.

If you have a large vise you can use t to press out and reinstall the joint. Other wise, careful work with a BFH will do...
