I'm in the Sacramento area and have a '95 FZJ80 and would like to get the head gasket replaced and the top end rebuilt. I sent a message to Robbie AKA PowderPig, the traveling Cruiser Mechanic, about making a stop in Sacramento and he mentioned that he might be able to do that in the September time-frame.

So I am looking to see if there are other people who need some work done and would be willing to split his travel costs. I think we would need around 5 people to make this work and ideally someone has some property where he would have room to work, my driveway does not have room for 5.

Sacramento AND the Bay Area.

I spoke with Robbie last week about coming back to the Bay Area since I'm in need of a full engine rebuild: Yes, HG related. I was going to post a new thread but it looks like it's started !

Robbie also mentioned September to me so I suggest we create a coordinator in each area so we may make this productive for Robbie. I'll volunteer myself for the Bay Area.

Robbie will be min 3 days at my house in Walnut Creek. My place can also be used for general wrenching or other work if you want to bring it to Robbie rather than him coming to you. I know there are another 2 maybe 3 possible HG jobs in the Bay Area. These came up just as Robbie was leaving to go home last month.

So, let's keep this thread going. Feel free to PM me or discuss here.

I might be interested in having him swap out my non-locking axles for lockers. Problem is that I live at an apartment in Natomas, with no garage.

I'm in Sacramento also and may be interested in having Robbie supervise some top-end work and setting up 3rd's with new gears. September would be just about the right time frame too.

If you don't mind the drive, bring it to Robbie who will be at my place in Walnut Creek for at least 3 days. I'm sure we can coordinate your work in between everything else or after he's done with me !

Robbie update !

'Talked' to Robbie this morning. It looks like his trip to CA will be mid September or so.

If you need any work performed by him, pls contact him or me so I can plan logistics. You may PM, e-mail (cme4lyt@sbcglobal.net) or phone (415-720-5194) me.

Let's start building some interest here so that we may spread Robbie's travel expenses among many people !

Another bump for attention...

Robbie planning to be here in Nor Cal begin/mid September.

Only two members signed up so far so it may have to get postponed. If anyone needs work 'soon' or if you know of someone in the 'need', pls mention this thread.

I would hate to postpone !!

Cool !

bugsnbikes: pls PM your info to me so that I can add you to the e-mail chain.

What's up! New member here (my intro thread)

The short of it is I just bought my first TLC! Don't no squat about it besides what I've read here (thanks guys!)... I'd be potentially interested in having some work done. Probably would just want him to "baseline" the truck and identify any potential future problems - maybe get a jump on the PHH or HG if those haven't been done and are looking suspect.

Sept might be a bit too far out to wait for a full fluids change, but I'm sure there's other work to be done... I love the idea of a knowledgeable enthusiast working on the truck.

I'll look more into this and keep everyone updated - can you put me down as a maybe?

Sent you a PM cme4lyt. I'm still interested.

Just a gentle BUMP for this thread.

Still looking for people who need Robbie in the Nor Cal Bay Area. We still need two folks to come forward so we can confirm this date.

Anyone else out there who needs to see Dr. Robbie ???

Questions

I'm new here so forgive my ignorance...

Did a quick search of "PowderPig" and it looks like he has the strong endorsements of a number of members here on Mud... Still, I'd like more opinions before committing to this... Are there other members that have thoughts on PowderPig and his work? Not trying to be too skeptical - just want more info before I commit...

Also, I have a bit of a dilemma... So I've got this new truck and the history is pretty much unknown to me, but it seems to be running well. I plan on keeping this truck for a while so I don't mind putting some money into PM and the like, but the problem is I don't even know what to look for... I guess I'd be interested in having PowderPig check out the truck and tell me what it needs, but how about parts? Does he have all the usual parts or would I find myself needing to source something same day? In other words, I'd love to have him diagnose and fix whatever's wrong on the same trip but maybe that's not possible...

Maybe I'll just have to wait until I spring for a supercharger and lift to use his services...

If anyone is on the fence in NorCal, here is some feedback on Robbie.

Robbie was at my place for a good portion of the May/June visit, staying in our guestroom for several weeks. When someone lives at your house you get to know them pretty well, and certainly more than any mechanic working on your rig in a shop. My four year old had a new friend and still months later asks about Robbie.

He is honest, and will bust his A$$ working on your rig. Normally he would work 10-12 hours per day on one of the three rigs which were "transformed" at my place. Plus his rate is MUCH less than what you would pay any other mechanic. You will also learn more about your rig than you can imagine.

It is your choice on how little or much he does when he works on your truck. Baseline, lift, bumpers, whatever YOU want, he will do. Typically he will let you know what issues he finds (and he will find issues), propose solutions based on how much you want to spend, and let you know what time/mileage you may get out of various paths. Most shops will just say "replace", where he will give you more than one option. I would also advise talking with him well in advance to determine at least the basic items which you want done, and then order the parts.

I am sure others will chime in on this one, but had to put in my $0.02.

Steve

Good to see Robbie putting that shirt to good use finally!

x a million what Steve said.

You just won't find a better professional 80 series mechanic in the US than Robbie.

might be interested in sac area

what is the best way to contact him?
to discuss pricing and options?

PM sent..

Steve- That motor looks great! I wonder how much he'd charge to swap axles? I may be interested, but my honey is giving me some heat about saving $:frown:. It's not as complex as a supercharger, but is serious grunt work, especially for an old-timer like me:grinpimp:.
