I actually took "Crushers" advice ( darn I hate admitting that on a public forum) and added an aftermarket water temp. / oil pressure and pyrometer gauge to my 1990 LJ78.
I now have more gauges than an Apollo Lunar Capsule.

They do wonders though so it's worth it. Does the water temp gauge impede that side vent at all? I am going to get rid of the altimeter and temp console on the dash and mount my other gauges there.
 
Where did you put the pyrometer probe? Did you go pre-turbo? How did you get access to that area?

Wayne you can not imagine how much it "pained" me to admit you were right on a public forum however even you get it right occasionally.
Here are the answers to the other questions: I do indeed have a boost gauge that is mounted under the dash just forward of the gear shifter however the way I drive the LJ78 it is rare to ever see it move.
The pyrometer is post turbo.
I chose the small gauges because they would fit between the dash and the door panel. The temp. gauge is manual while the oil pressure gauge is electric. I did not want to interfere with or remove the factory altimeter and temp sensors.

could you give me details on the gauges and sensors you installed? I have looked online and there are so many over a whole range of prices that I have no idea where to start and what is good. I always like personnal recommendations!!! Looking at a water temp gauge first.

seriously, pyro would be my suggestion as the FIRST gauge in ANY diesel.

A good aftermarket water temp. gauge would be next.
My factory gauge had readings all over the place while the aftermarket gauge is rock steady.

The water temp gauge is the most important out of the after market lot........never mind the pyro.
 
really?

your speaking from experience i assume? you have installed a pyro in any of your vehicles?
 
Got to side with Wayne on this one.....pyrometer first, water temp. gauge next. Kinda like watching a tennis match...your eyes are constantly moving from gauge to gauge. ( Its a talent most other drivers don't have).:)

I agree. My opinion is to get both pyro and temp right away. I use Prospost gauges. They have a memory of max temp so if your friend, kids or wife drives you know how hot they got it :D:D You can also set an alarm or make the gauge flash at the the max temp you want so if your not looking it will tell you when to back off the throttle. If you get the premium 60 mm gauges the come with the mounting pods. I think mine were around $200 plus some change for the two shipped to my door.

Ok back to the point.

Knowing that the standard toyo temperature gauges are not too responsive and excesively slow to the apparant temperature changes, such a gauge is a must and should be first on the list.

By the time the standard toyo temperature gauge reacts, its often too late!

This is very similar to the chicken and egg argument.
Either way something can end up "fried" is you are not careful.:)

All I am saying is I would install the temperature gauge 1st as opposed to the egt. My reason for the temp gauge is that the standard toyo unit is not too responsive.

If an egt gauge is so necessary then why are they not fitted as factory standard? I rest my case.

Man we could bat this one around all day.:)
1st.....Toyota builds and installs an engine that is notoriously un-reliable.
2nd....Toyota builds and installs a water temp. gauge that is notoriously un-reliable.
Installing a factory pyrometer would be Toyota's way of admitting that they had screwed up which is something large corporations have a hard time doing.
