I know there are some older threads on this subject but they are so old most of
the pics are gone. Wanted to see if we could get some pics on what others have done with redoing the rear shock mounts. It's a known problem with most of them rusting out. Mine was redone incorrectly and I want to re weld square tubing etc. What have you done?

To the rear of the original shock mounts, the frame and the body rise up a few inches. I put a piece of 2.5" square tubing between the frame rails back there with some extra beefy brackets welded on that extend up as high as I could get them without hitting the body. I angled the brackets (with a mounting stud) forward from the tube to avoid interference issues. I gained three or four inches of room for longer shocks which I desperately needed and it is substantially stronger than the original tube.

This is it. I measured very carefully so that this piece would fit tightly between the frame rails. Sure makes it easier to weld into place when it isn't whacking your face. It is Hard to see in these pics, but I put it sits several inches higher than the original cross tube to allow the most flexibility with shock length. All the original POS does now is hold up my muffler.

Thats very similar to what I did. Works well.

Did you see the gaping hole n the passenger side of the original tube? That happened when I was way back in the Needles District of Canyonlands NP. That was the final straw.

Yea huge holes. When I bought mine it was poorly re mounted and welded. Then a few months back the left mount broke. I'm a skilled welder and can't wait to beef it up and get some added travel. Have you done anything else to your suspension?

Mine rusted out and finally broke off a few weeks ago. I just cut it completly off at both ends, cleaned it up with an angle grinder and welded in a new piece of round pipe. I cut off the old shock bolt mounts and rewelded them to the new pipe. I am not the best welder so the welds dont look great, but it seems very strong. Seems like just going back with round and putting it in the same place is the eaisiest option.
