so one of my t.r.e's is shot, brake pads are worn, wheel bearings need clean up, birfields are clicking so for safety reasons its SOA time for me.

i have a stack of used front axle parts including rotors, shaft and hardware...i also got marlin hysteer and ruffstuff perch set.

i still need a pile of parts but ill get them as i go...

the only catch is that im doing this in my driveway and its pretty dang cold out. i will post my progress to show how i am going to do this and am open to pointers/advice.

ive only worked on this for two days now so i havent done much...

i will put all the picture @

since i get trigger happy with the camera :D

first problem is the ruff stuff perch for the front axle pumking side, it will require major grinding to make it fit.

IMG_0020.jpg

a small issue i also have is my driver side front spring pack, it is bend on the back and the main leaf has a gap betweeen the leaf.(see pics)

i also notice the leaf eyes are loose on the bushings...

My ruff stuff perch was the same way I had to almsot take the whole middle out to make it fit. But when it was all said and done I liked it instead of a bent U bolt.

kurtis,
got any pictures for reference of the finished pumpkin side ruffstuff perch?

heres more of the mods i have done:
notice the bolt eye holes

Man, I shivered just looking at those pictures...

bro you need to check the warranty on ur springs ..... you might be able to get a new spring pack

i did a transfer case in middle december last year, it rained the whole time and since i am a rookie, it only took one week :P
itll make it more savorable in the end.

its been over two years since i bought those springs, and id have to replace as a set because they have settled and flattened quite a bit since i got them. im not too worried about the springs.

more thinking about things to do:
i still got to figure out what size shocks to get and order some extended brake lines. my hubs were also CRUSTED which is going to take a nice afternoon to clean out. i also have to get some rotors turned, and that means haivng to take out the lug studs...

I don't think I have any pictures of the perch of hand but I had to make very similar modifications to it. I was a little frustrated with it at first as it seemed a little odd to have to grind up a perch specifically for that application but it is a good way of avoiding having to use a special U bolt

Hey Simon.
What tires/gear ratio you plan on running?
Nice work....!!

You are more of a man than I doing it in the cold like that. I am only a little further ahead than, but let me know if I can help in any way. Good luck!!

X3 on the special pumpkin-side perch...had to make some serious mods to make it work...but it's on there now and works great.

that's what living in a cold climate will do to you...make you crazy :-) people are complaining here because it's been 60 and rainy

i got a set of 35in wrangler mtr kevlars, already mounted and balanced on 15x10 rims
i was gonna get some 5:29 gears since these are probably gonna be the smallest tires to ever be on the truck.

thanks dude, i do what i gotta do.
i bet you will be done faster then me :)

see below how im handling that perch

heres what i got so far from that perch
i got to grind the edges a bit more so the perch sits on the axle housing more flush.

i am doing the cut and turn

here is a reference of a knuckle i cut of a different axle housing:

<caliper reading in mm(variance ~><.5mm*)
*housing has 1mm variance somehow

looks good. Kudos to you for taking this on in the cold. It will be nice to have it completed for the summer wheeling season. One observation from a fellow Ruff Stuff perch user the distance between the two peices need to be the same width as the leaf.

I had to take off a LOT of material to get it to sit level and at the same width as the spring.

how bad were the shocks when you pulled them?
and looking at how bad the drivers side leaf pack is that was prolly what was making it sit cock eye'd

hey clint,
i dont see whats wrong with putting the perch piece not as far as the width of the spring. but ill take that into consideration, tomorow i am goingt o have to grind more off everything;

as i got ahead of myself today and mounted the axle to the springs to see how things were lining up. see pictures.

i notices the ubolts provide by ruff stuff dont fit proper (they are too tight) but i can work with them as their plate have wide holes.

i stopped to look at things for a while and rebuilt my lock hubs since there were fully of muddy grease.

shocks seemed fine when i checked them.
and i dunno, the truck is sitting on the frame right now and its level under the chasis (ithinks) anjd the body is still still on a slant.

The way your axle is positioned in the photo it doesn't look like the pinion angle is going to be correct.
I hope that was just done to see how the springs sit on the new perches.
Nice work!!!
p.s. The weather is supposed to warm up a bit for Thurs. and Fri.

Xs 2 on that angle!!!! I also see you have grinded it down clean for welding too. I hope you plan to cut and turn that bugger???
Nice work..... I used a big parachute and a diesel heater when I did a tranny swap in January in Alaska it was a balmy -5 outside and a scorching 40 inside the chute... just an idea for ya.

if you look close, youll notice the ubolts arent even tighened down on those pics above, i still have to do a bit more fitting for the perches. also the ubolts dont fit with the welds down the axle housing which is making it very dificult to line up the pinion angle.

in all reality i shouldnt of mounted the housing yet, i just want ted see how it looked.

i dont plan on doing the cut and turn, i noticed a lot of threads were people havent done the cnt because the auto transmission drive shaft is longer...blah blah. and its to cold to be doing that much work. if i really need the cnt i can do it in the spring time.
