I'm trying to assemble all the bits and pieces I'll need to swap a reworked and de-smogged head and manifolds onto my 3FE. While I'm in the states for S'nT, I figure it would be a good chance to get all the OEM stuff I need from CDan and save the cross-border shipping/gouging.

I started a list, I think I've got everything that the FSM suggests I would need... anything I am missing? Any reason not to go OEM on any of it?

-Head gasket
-Combination manifold gasket
-Intake plenum gasket (between the 2 parts of the intake casting)
-Thermostat housing (water outlet) gasket
-Throttle body gasket
-Idle speed control gasket
-Plugs for air injectors
-Cold start injector gasket
-Thermostat and gasket
-Fuel line crush washers? - will I need some?
-Valve guide bushings and oil seals? - I assume I'll need new oil seals, but are the bushings usually replaced? or only if there is a problem?

I figure I'll do all the coolant hoses while I am at it, and put in a new side cover gasket. Anything else I should do at the same time? (oil galley plug of course)

Thanks for any input you can offer.
Curtis.

Jim I bet he would love to know what you have done to your heads;)

:whoops: I cant remember the Chevy part #'s or I would say.

If there is a simple valve swap, I'd look into that. One of the things I intend to try is re-profiling the stock valves if it won't compromise them (rimflow intake and antireversal exhaust). Are larger valves necessarily better, if they cut down on the clearance to the wall of the CC? From Matt's build, it looks like the larger Ferrea valves he used cut down on the clearance for gas flow 3/4 of the way around each valve.

Any other good 3FE head rebuild threads?

A high quality set of 1.84 & 1.50 SBC valves is an easy install, along w/ 12 of the short SBC exh valve springs and stock SBC locks & retainers. The stem and valve head are large enough to require machining into new material, but no so big as to require installing bigger seat inserts. So it's like getting brand new seats and guides, but without the hassle.

If the machine shop says "what's a 1.84 SBC valve" or "what's a short SBC spring vs. the standard SBC spring?", then select a different, more competent machine shop.

Would the oil seals be chosen to match the head casting, or the valves?

Valve seals will fit the valve diameter and the guide OD.

So the existing 2F seals will work on the SBC valves? That is what I am reading into the above

No, there are Ford application seals that have the correct guide diameter for the toyota guide, and stem diameter for the chevy valves. Jim has the diameters posted in another thread somewhere, but your machinist can figure it out with the Ford tip.

darn

I told my machinist to go with the 2F seals as that is what I interpreted the above post - my bad.

I will stop by tomorrow and inform him I was wrong.

thanks for the info, that helps - a lot. I have not found the diameters though, but will inform him of the Ford app. Wish that tidbit had been posted in this thread. Well, it is now.
