After going through the seized smog pump ordeal, burning off the v-belt and trying to drive a couple miles back home without the water pump going and the engine overheating; I was thinking about these adjustable v-belt links used in machinery (Table saw pulleys, etc.) and wondered if they would work temporarily in place of a regular belt. They could be adjusted by linking up enough links to fit the application, such as in my case where I could bypass the smog pump and still run the water pump. Anyone use these as a temp. fix???

NuTLink V-Belts and SuperTLink Wedge Belts from Fenner Drives

The belt from the air conditioner is supposed to fit between the water pump and the crank pulley (I think). Why not just carry a spare or an old one or just take the one off the ac when the smog pump seizes?

yes, they are interchangable belts. it saved my butt one time way out in the sticks at night.

I use the fenner power twist belts on some of my woodworking machines. I thought about carrying enough to make a temporary belt. They do seem to be tough enough, but the problem would be getting them tight enough. They have almost no stretch so unless you are putting them somewhere where you can tension them it would be tough to get the links together. Usually the tensioner is what breaks in the system - either the alternator or the smog pump etc.

The a/c belt can be run between the alternator, crank and water pump. You would bypass the power steering and smog pump.
