I figured while the powerplant is out, I'll go ahead and give the bay a quick paint job. I need to pick a neutral color that will go with whatever I decide to paint the outside later on, considering a dark blue or metallic brown for that. So for the bay I'm thinking maybe tan, white or gray. Any suggestions?

I would lean towards neon green, with yellow tribal flames running on the inside walls.

Seriously, I would go gray out of those three options. But why not paint to match:confused:

I did my engine bay with rust bullet. I like the gray.

I always like semi-flat black. I guess I'm just boring.

But why not paint to match:confused:

Because I don't know what color I will paint the outside, and I can't afford the paint job yet. I'm borrowing a hvlp gun from a friend for the bay.

3M spray on undercoating in black. Available at any reputable body parts shop for about $9 a can. One can will do it all and will be a rust barrier/sound deadener/etc...

also known as 'rust enhancer extreme'. water will get trapped between the tar-goo and eat up the body without you seeing it. and it will be a huge enormous PITA to get that stuff out again. seriously, I think the devil invented it, and 3M distributes it for him.
I am sorry you have that shyte already in your truck, and I predict you will regret putting it in deeply and soon.
To anyone else, do NOT do that.
and I am not mocking you.

I'd do primer gray

easy enough to match it, and you can always rattle-can over it if you want to get a closer match later

rust bullet

I recently did a lot of engine parts with Rust Bullet. First time for me. I liked the way is was packaged in small amounts so that you did not have to worry about losing. Also, it appeared to adhere well to painted surfaces and rust with just basic surface prep...knock off the rust flakes, Dawn dish soap, then rinse and dry. POR-15 is a pain because of all the steps and I have had problems with it sticking to paint. The silver/gray color of the Rust Bullet is a downside for an engine bay perhaps but that is the way I would go. However, I have no long-term information.

That's an interesting idea. Could you post a picture of your engine bay?

I had to use brushes to put on the rust bullet but was not too bad and really like how both the front two fenders turned out. I completely removed the front two fenders and cleaned them up and used the rust bullet.

I would do dark. A black or dark gray will never get noticed by anyone.

Those pics look great Kevin, thanks for posting them. I'm almost sold on doing that. Why did you use a brush instead of spraying?

Cool.. Glad the pictures helped. It came in a can and I don't have a compressor or a gun to spray it on. Think they recommended brushing it on when I did it awhile back. Check out there site or give them a call.

did you paint the engine bay with the motor and everything still in or with it out? pulled out my 2 front fenders and im going to paint them and was thinking of doing the rest of the engine bay.

I did everything with the engine out and removed the fenders and front support.

Um, no. Use it all the time for sealing steel sailboat decking. Used it on my Kasier since 1991. No rust problems whatsoever. Either we are miscommunicating or someone's biased.
