OK after some searching for information about the rear step I have a question or two.

One: Did any year step have a hole drilled for a hitch ball?

I have seen pics of many that did but there is no honking way that would be safe. The one I bought recently has three holes in it. One for a ball, the other two I'm assuming are for safety chains... I'm about to weld up the holes and just wanted to make sure they were not OEM.

This step fits the 1974 bumper I have installed on my 2/71 so I'm assuming it's correct for the year?

Two: Is there a TRUE OEM step or are they all after market? How does one tell the difference between them?

I'll add pics of mine in s few minutes.... :D

The pic may be misleading. :D It's upside down. I'm getting ready to weld on it. The weird thing clamped to it is a CPU heat sink. Has copper on the other side. The weld won't stick to the copper and will make a nice flat surface so there will be little grinding to do.

My 71 FJ40 came with a rear step, it's still at my Dads house I took It off in 1976

I never seen one with a hole for a trailer ball kinda flimsy

Did it look like mine?

I agree there is no way I would tow a trailer with this step.

I have one from a '68. Looks just like that one. No holes in it. I wouldn't think that would pull more than 200 lbs.

Rear steps can be OEM. The hitch ball does not mount to the step.

There is a OEM rear trailer hitch that bolts on to the big 4 bolt holes in the center of the rear crossmember. The hitch ball sets on the hitch mount, on the middle of the step. The towball is bolted through the hitch mount, and also the step. There are no safety chain holes in the step, AFAIK. The step is just sharing the hitch ball mount, but is not used for structure.

Sorry, no pics at this time.

I will look at my rig tomorrow and try to take a photo.

ah pretty cool

yes, pretty cool something else to spend on now! I have an ugly big square plate with a ball hitch on it. So it looks like the hole is just access to change out the tow ball.

I'm looking for a pintle with a ball for mine but I like the step

I just saw those last week, how cool is that! :)

I have on OEM one, had another perfect one, but a local cop(son of a friend) was restoring a 40..so I gave it to him as he wanted one, he turned around an Ebay'd it for $150....which I thought was pretty darn uncool

Sorry here is the link to his store:

He's going to get me divorced with all the parts I'm getting from him... ;)

That is BS... I have a mountain bike I told my cousin he could use on permanent loan. Only rule was he didn't sell it when he was done with it. Hate when you try to be nice to someone and they take advantage of it.

And @Racer65 is a stand up dude who really is creating some cool stuff for the Cruiser community. I've been lucky enough to do some beta testing for him and getting an early sneak peak on stuff.

I've bought other used things from other MUDders and for the most part have been really pleased. Most people here are standup people and don't misrepresent their goods. And charge a fair price. Great community!
