I had been trying to extend time between oil changes by using Mobil 1 EP and getting it tested by Blackstone to verify oil wear. It seems 15k miles on this oil using my engine is too much. The good news is that I had to add zero oil during the period.

I think I will file a lawsuit against Mobil 1 for false advertising .

I know, I know... frequent oil changes are cheap insurance. So I will reduce to 7,500, I think.

Early oil changes might be cheaper.

I have tried 93 and get ZERO MPG gains; however I may try again as my MPG has now decreased to 11-12, down from 14-15.

sounds like you could go 10K without worries-- they said 12,500, right?

too bad you did not get the total base number (TBN) analyzed, i would have liked to see if the oil was still providing sufficient lubrication. but i think blackstone charges another $x for that. i plan to get a UOA at 10k miles, i will get the TBN at that time and report back.

edit: i ran M1 on my tacoma regularly for 10k miles no problem with wear or lubricity. thats my plan for the LC too.

What kind of filter did you use?

I've actually stopped using Mobil1 several years ago. Wasn't impressed. Switched to Amsoil, Royal Purple, and currently Valvoline. Royal Purple actually had the best results @ 10k miles for me.

I use WIX oil filters (NAPA Gold). I think the best is Amsoil EaO, but they're spendy. WIX is about as good for 1/2 of the price.

So I'm a Blackstone ignoramus... what's the implication of 30PPM iron in your oil? Is that "bad"? I would assume it to be proportionately higher than lower mileage intervals, I guess I'm just missing the "so what"? Does that mean your engine is imploding, or just that you have oil that's dirtier than your 10K mile interval?

:meh:

They were saying that the 30ppm Iron is not an issue but just a result of the longer interval (ie, you get so much wear per 1000 miles of use and it increases in a linear fashion). Once you get too much wear iron in the oil though it starts to create increased wear that can be seen in the other metal levels. That's the indication to shorten the interval.

can you do a bypass filtration system on a gas engine?....I run one on my diesel and can go longer intervals between changes.......

You can but the main benefit to the bypass filter is cleaning out soot which is not a problem contaminate in a gas engine.

pegasis - How many cold starts on that interval ?

Makes sense, but I didn't see where the PPM's for the metals justified the comments to reduce the interval.
