So it's cold in Spokane right now. High today is going to be 7 degrees. Too cold for a desert rat like me, but...

When I start driving (after some warm up) it sounds like a wind up toy. Like when I would back up my Taco.

Is this just the fluid in the diffs warming up, it was -5 this morning, or could this be more serious?

After driving for a while it does go away, but it is quite noticible cold.

I did just get the diffs, tranny, and xfer case serviced @ the dealer a week and a half ago. Rig has 99,xxx on it. I did have a little bit of a burning smell after service but I chalked it up to overfill.

It's normal to hear it in L, but I've never heard it in 4hi. Once the temp needle starts moving it goes away.
 
temp needle/ sound goes away. sounds like a engine issue. but i could be wrong. I have a little wind the first 5 minutes I drive also, only in the winter though. I have wondered what it was, but never thought it was big enough to worry about. my temp needles gave out a while ago. been meaning to get a scanguage, but have that feeling its another pointless add-on that wont give me accurate readings... who knows
 
the temp needle going up and the sound going away is not indicative of a engine issue. It just so happens, that when coolant warms up, so does the oil, and all the other fluids from being used while driving. Its astonishing really.

i knew it wasnt something bad. I just heard it every once in a while. never thought it was something to worry about and ask on mud.
 
I get some t-case whine when it's really cold out, it's normal.

I get a nice whine from my t-case if my truck is really cold. Goes away after 5-10 minutes.
 
I meant that once the engine warms up enough to start moving the temp gauge needle it goes away. Sorry for not being clear. It was 5 this morning and same thing.

I am from PHX and this is not something I am accustomed to. Thanks for the input.
 
It was 1 degree here and mine did it too. Mine was definitely transfer case whine. I'm going to switch to synthetic fluid over the holidays. That helps a lot when it is cold out. The PS pump and even my heater fan had a whine to it this morning. But they went away before I drove it. Cold is just as hard on things as hot.

my heater fan has a whine on cold morning. its not 1 degree here, but it sometimes dips around 20-25. But its rare....my engine has a nice whine for the first 5 minutes or so. my house near an interstate (im always on highway) so going down the street I put it in L, and hold it at 2K for a bit, then go up to 2.5K and so on. till 4K. and then I jump on the interstate and pop cruiser control at 90 :steer:

My engine seems to like my warm up process. Ive gotten the temp needle to hit center in about 3 minutes. ( 34 outside)
 
Nick, try to keep the RPMs as low as possible until the engine is up to temp, running it up to 4k isnt healthy on a cold motor.

i run it to 4k when the need hits dead center. I run it at 2k untill I get it up to temp. yeah, i dont exactly startup and floor it down the street bouncing off the rev limiter..... and it usually isnt that cold here. right now its 65 degrees right now. and its mid december. So id say a cold engine here is actually pretty warm compared to your cold engines at -31 degrees or 20 degrees and snowy.

(its also so my mother will stop complaining cuase the heater is blowing "semi-cold" air)
 
It was 65 degrees here monday, and snowed at <30 degrees yesterday. Turn the heat off or to "auto" when the engine is cold. It will not kick on until the coolant has warmed up sufficiently to warm the air.




So regarding the diff/TC fluids guys, is a synthetic a better option for extreme colds?

crazy weather man. ill do that with the heater. fan switch is loose so i leave it on auto so i dont have to mess with it.

something I just remembered also. kind of a common sense question. but would it be wise to change over to synthetic fluids at once? or doesnt matter.

and wondering what loud is too.

uhhh let me rephrase that.

would it be wise to switch ALL your fluids to synthetic as once? engine, tran case, and all that good stuff?
