Anyone experienced these problems with 4.7?

I noticed this post in the Toyota section of Pirate4x4 the other day. Pietro, I think, is a Toyota mechanic and he was very negative about the 4.7 engine and the 4speed transmission, like what is in my 2001 LC.

Has anyone here experienced these kinds of problems that Pietro describes in post 2 of that thread? I know the exhaust manifold cracks aren't unheard of, but what about the cracked flexplates, smoked TCC lockup clutches, and blown overdrive planetaries?

If it matters, I bought my LC to tow my skiboat and maybe to haul my 85 4Runner rock truck around on a light flatbed. I have no intention of doing any major engine enhancements so I doubt I'd experience these problems, but . . .

Just wondering,

2nd downs 22r - best motor Toyota has ever made IMO - check Toyota high mileage club you will find many 22r going forever

I think the 4.7 kicks ass I tow everything with it travel trailer, popup, and boat. Just changed the tranny fuild and when I drained I felt like putting it back in. It looked and smelt new. O my 100 has 120k on it. No worries towing with a 100 in my camp.

I haven't heard of a single case of these problems on the board and I read way too much.
 
Difference between the Tundra motor being built in the states and the L/C motor in Japan. I know they have more trouble with the Tundra powertrain than the japanese built stuff. Only thing I have seen ever fail is trans internals (thrust washers) and I've seen as many 5 spds and 4spds, both of which together maybe 6. I've got 170k on mine and have a few customers who have 250-270 and none of us have ever experienced these problems.

There are major issues with the 1st generation Tundra in towing applications. That's why there is an 8 speed tranny in the 2nd gen.

I am using a 1U for a 2002 Celica because the block is lighter and cheaper than the cast iron 4.7.

Lextreme is an excellent resource for engine build/turbo information.

5speed in the 4Runner (and Sequoia?) is different than the one in the 100, too. 4Runner planetary gears are aluminum to save 200 lbs. vs. steel in the 100.
 
The only problem with the 4.7L would the skinny rods. The 4.7 rods break all the time. However, you can get forged h beam rods for replacement.

Looking at that pirate thread is a good reminder why one should never take any serious (brand) advice off of a general off road forum. Too much bias involved which ends up as misleading and false information. Owner forums like Mud give you useful info that if someone gets on and tries to mislead because of ignorance are quickly corrected or questioned until the truth is clear.
 
If you go to your local engine core junk yard and you will see most of the 2uzfe blocks have broken rods. Here one example http://www.lextreme.com/tundra.html. Misleading? I deal with this everyday! For this very reason TRD stop making the M90 supercharger kit. If you want to know the truth, please go to a forum that mainly deals with Lexus and Toyota V8 engines. After you spend few days reading it, then u understand why....

Looks like I'd better stop driving my '99 & sell it...or carry my bicycle along for when the rods break ;).
 
Sorry guys I am not trying to create fear. I was refering to FI with rod breakage on the 2uzfe engine. N/A you are find. However, I still see alot in junk yard with broken rods. Most the junkyard blocks got hydrolock due to BHG.
 
well, unfortunately, we have plenty of 80s (1FZJs) with HG failure, unlike the 2U, but I don't remember any which got busted conrods because of hydrolocking.
then again, I would not be surprised if the 1FZJ has stronger rods.
 
The rods are weak and will fail first in the 2uz and 3uz motors when boosting as Lextreme has stated..I too have seen this happen first hand.....I concure with Lextreme %100... N/A you are good to go, no need to put the bicycle in the trunk for when rods break... THe stoutest of motors is the early model 1uz-fe, the 4.0 liter motor that can support 400whp at stock form... Rods are more stout.. Toyota designers started slacking on tensel rod strength in future comparible motor designs...
