6 year lifespan on the factory CD player. About 4 months ago, the 6-CD player demoted itself to a 3-CD player. Then it promoted itself back to a 6-CD player with a persuasive whack on the dash. Now it has decided CD's are passe', and we should upgrade.

Wifey tried my recommended "pound on the dash" trick to attempt to unstick the CD player. But there must be a finite number of times that you can do that before the head unit tells you :flipoff2: .

So, I ordered a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 and the BlueTooth & IPOD moduels from Crutchfield, and will look forward to the install next week. I've searched and read through a few posts from those who have switched to aftermarket units. Saw a few nice pics of an FJ install. And checked out yotatech. But did not find any nice pics behind the dash of a 100-Series, with correct wire colors and all. (Will STFA again when the boxes show up).

Anybody else here in 100 Series have any experience with the AVIC-Z1 install? I think the only tough part is tapping the speed sensor wire. Where is it? How to find it?

I'll take pics and post a write-up if I don't find another one on mud.
[Edit: My install pics start at reply #47 on page 2, or thereabouts.]

[Edit: Later, when the AVIC-Z1 arrived, wifey mentioned "oh, the CD player started working again today.....But I still want you to put in that new one!" At least I was able to eject all the disks before pulling the Toyota radio out of the dash.]

I have the Avic-zi installed.it's not bad.You will a wire adapter if you are going to use the stock amp ( i have one if you are interested). The speed wire is behind the glove box by the ecu,it's a purple wire.
The tough part was running the antenna,i installed mine at the rear.

Slow going so far...

Does anybody have the factory pin assigments for the factory Radio Connector A? There are 14 wires that go into the connector from the dash. Oddly, Crutchfield's mating connector only has 10 wires coming out. Their Tech Support tells me I don't need the other 4 wires.

There are two coax antennas in the factory radio. One is the main 75 Ohm connector that runs to the power antenna on the front of the vehicle. The other is the diversity/AM radio antenna, which Crutchfield says I don't need. Hmmm..

I tapped the "SPD" wire going into one of the ECU connectors.

I also tapped the "Reverse" wire going into another pin on the same ECU connector.

I can see the parking brake switch, but can't get to it yet. It dives down under the driver's seat. I can't reach it until I move the seat back (when the battery is reconnected) or I'll find it somewhere under the dash.

I placed the GPS antenna on the driver's side of the dashboard next to the sun sensor. I ran the wire down into the left trim/kick panel, under the carpet beneath the brake & throttle, and then back up the side of the tunnel's carpet and into the dash.

I stuck the Voice microphone on top of the steering column trim.

I still haven't hidding the IPOD controller and BlueTooth module yet. Gotta find some juicey power taps.

Pictures if/when I finish this install.

Match up your stereo to one of these diagrams.

http://carstereohelp.net/wireharness_Toyota2.htm

My guess would be that Crutchfield gave you the wrong connector. Mine matched up perfectly if I remember.

As far as the parking brake switch, I am not sure if it will work the same as my Kenwood....but when I grounded my wire it made is so I didn't have to have the brake engaged to watch dvds. The Pioneer might be different though.

Thanks, Tex.

That was a great link. Toyota Wire Harness Diagram #5 is the one that matches my 2000/03 radio. I only have one connector. The 20 pin on the right.

I wonder why Toyota doesn't print that on the back of the radio itself.

Time to kiss the kids good night, check the beer supply, and do some more tinkering.

That right you only need 10 wires 4 for left/right front/rear.1 blk for grd red, yellow and 2 blues.

The rev wire you can connect to the rev light wire by the rear light assy.

The Pbrake wire is 12volt,the wire run in a wire loom on the side of the console, you can use a long screw driver to undo the clip,it's easy.

Use can get pwr tap right their from the radio connector.
The second antenna plug is for diversity FM radio antenna not AM.

Hope this help.

Thanks for all the help. Finished the install.

The GPS antenna on the dash picked up 3 satellites from INSIDE my garage. I bet it would have worked hidden inside the dash on top of the Speedo cluster. I know people who have installed them that way in Audi vehicles and it gets a signal through the foam/vinyl dashboard.

I hid the BlueTooth module in passenger side dash behind knee guard to left of the glove box.

I hid the IPOD module in the storage compartment under arm rest; removed the lighter socket for power and access into the console tunnel. The IP-Bus cable BARELY reached the radio opening.

I guided harness, cables, spare connections to area below the radio so as not obstruct the fan on the back of the AVIC-Z1. I can get to the spare connectors for AUX, Camera, Rear Monitor without removing the radio in the future.

Nice sound! I really like the EQ settings. BlueTooth to phone is nice. Haven't played with IPOD yet, but the module is being recognized.

I'll do a full write-up with pics later.

Wife and kids already asking me when I'll install a rear seat video screen and the backup camera. (Insert sound of $$$ falling out of my wallet here....) Wife has already ripped 12 CDs to the built-in Hard Drive library.

Thanks for the link

I just ordered a 12Volt coler day/night rear view camera for $40 + $10 shipping with the ebay vendor mentioned in the recent post about camera install. Great price! Love the internet.

Pioneer wants $240 for theirs. Local electronics store wants $150, and their only 12V camera for "Reverse view for campers and trucks" comes in a big honker of a box you have to bolt on with a bracket. Not very stealthy.

Now I have to look for a spot to drill a keyhole to mount it. Project for next weekend.

Not sure what size camera you got, but mine was the perfect size to replace my rear hatch keyhole. No cutting or drilling needed. Just took out the key cylinder and replaced it with the camera.

Yup.

Got a keyhole-sized camera too. Do you miss having a rear hatch key socket?

I use the rear key socket a lot, since I carry the non-radio key with me (less worry about ruining the RC fob during emergency wading in the surf if I catch a fish).

What did you do with the lock cylinder when you replaced it with the camera? Did you clip it and tape off the wires? Is there any impact to your alarm system or door lock/unlock operation for the rest of the vehicle?

The alternative mounting places will require drilling either the lift gate (sheet metal) or the bumper (plastic). the rear spoiler (plastic), or maybe tapping the tow bar tab with a homemade bracket and rivet (though this is kind of too low to the ground I think).

I always use the remote, so the loss of the key use was not a big deal.

I didn't need to cut any wires. The wires were connected my a small clip that just came off. No mechanics are connected. The cylinder itself was held in place by a metal clip. Very easy to take the lock off and could easily be put back on. Taped the wires to the lock cable so it didn't dangle and make any noise.

No effect on my alarm or locks at all.

Thanks again for the reassurance, LonghornCruiser. Sounds pretty doable. I forget if you said how you routed the video cable. Did you go under carpet? Under trim on Driver's or Passenger's side? Down into a frame rail and up the tranny holes?

I tested Wifey's reaction today to possibly losing the rear keyhole to a camera.

"Ahhhh, let's not spend any more money on this stuff. I'm just happy with my new Nav/Stereo."

Well, when Brown drops off the camera to the house this week, she might end up changing her mind. Maybe she's more concerned about losing me to the garage for another long night of tinkering.

Just explain how this is a huge safety feature and is really "For the childrens sake". Is she against child safety!

Does the Avic-Z1 look like this X1?

Looking forward to see your install.

I must be the only person in the world who likes the big OEM stereo controls better than the tiny little controls you get on all the aftermarket units.

Do they make aftermarket units with more usable controls ?

I ran the wires on the driver's side because that is the side the wires are ran for the license plate lights out of the tailgate. You will have to run a video cable to the stereo and a power cable to the reverse light wire. Should be able to tap into the reverse light thru jack panel. I ran the video cable under the edge of the rear side panel...under the door jam trim (held on by little clips. should just pop up).... up under the dash to the back of the stereo.

I actually put in a toggle switch up front that allows me to switch from reverse light power to ignition power so I can use it as a rear view cam while driving. My stereo does the auto sensing camera power thing, so I just flip the switch and it is on constant. Did it just to do it, really.

Are there any in dash DVDs that will play with the vehicle moving? I know its illegal and all but just curious.
