What's it worth?

I've been watching this one for awhile. Can anyone tell me a realistic value for this one? Is it worth the asking price? Also I've read a lot about these conversions causing too much vibration, anyone own one that can enlighten me?

The main problem with this conversion is the 700r4. Everyone one ive seen thats come up for sale has magically had them "rebuilt" after less than 60k miles. Im pretty sure Proffits built these with 'supposed' heavy duty 700r4s.....but from what i gather---they just suck and die an early death. Not much point in having an uber-bombroof engine attached to a slushbox thats a very weak link in the chain......

add to that the vibs issue and dropping $3k every two to 3 years on a new tranny...........and you can see why these have been flooding the market.

the 4bts with that slushbox are getting 1-2mpg at best over a well tuned 1fz.

the other main reason the 4bt isnt matched well to the 80 is that the diffs cant be geared lower than the 4.11s....this engine really likes to make power in the 1400-1600 range.......which is why the mpgs suffer in the 80/700r4.

realistic value will factor in solving the tranny/ gearing problems. The only way that makes sense is to run an h55f and a big rubber overdrive (like 39s) to get this 4bt down to its sweet spot.

I emailed the seller with several questions: How many miles are on the donor engine? ...... Answer ... Unknown
What is the average fuel economy? ......Answer....unknown ( supposedly they have only driven the Cruiser 100 miles since the conversion )
May have a few bugs to work out. :)
 
I get 18+ mpg freeway going 75 at 2k Rpm.. I don't like autos.. I have a NV4500 to an Orion behind my 4bt. With fluid filled motor mounts vibration is not there. The main thing that turns some people off is the "idling" noise. It's as quiet as a a gasser at freeway speed with the cool turbo whistle....

I thank you all for sharing your thoughts with me. I want to be as informed as I can when I make my decision. Any thought on running a 6.5 GM diesel? I've been told that getting parts for the Toyota diesel may be difficult?
 
Torfab north of Seattle does a lot of the 6.2/6.5 conversions for the 80's. They are fairly quiet and smooth for a diesel, get between 18-22mpg apparently. They don't make as much power as you would expect for their displacement, but the parts are cheap and plentiful. Going with a mil-spec motor is apparently the best way to go for a variety of reasons.

I believe he quoted me a ballpark estimate around $10K out the door, but that was the high end of the complexity scale (electric vs mechanical, AC, ECU, marks adapter, custom hoses/fittings, etc) . That was a quote from last year, so YMMV.

I don't know, I'm kind of torn between the easier/cheaper 6.5 and a more powerful/efficient Cummins swap. I do digg the diesel rattle :D

X2 on the liquid filled forklift engine mounts. Smooooths out the savage Cummins rather nicely in the one I saw.
 
Am not hugely impressed at looking through the current (Suday, 9/23) eBay description - in two places ("engine" and "fuel type" it says "gas"; whereas in the ad's headline and "sub model" it says "diesel". That is a big warning sign for me: makes me wonder how carefully the owner dealt with other issues regarding the vehicle.
