I hate my 62.
Last night i was driving home got off the hwy stop and go traffic for a while then it died. It would turn over but not start and no check engine light. Usually this is caused by a bad fuseable link to the EFI. No luck jumping it. Towed it back to the shop.
This AM I got to thinking it was the main EFI relay so I tested it. It tested fine but no luck. Changed it out and still no luck. Went through all fuses and all were fine.
Got to thinking it might be the circuit opening relay so changed it out. No luck.
Went back to basics and checked for current to the main EFI relay. None. For some reason the EFI was getting no current and no check engine light.
Ruled out the neutral start switch. ABout all that is left is the puter. Pulled it and replaced it with a known good one. No luck.
No this is pissing me off. Went through the FSM for the troubleshooting guide. I did find that if the ign was on and i grounded the W terminal the check engine light would come on but the truck was still not starting.
I could get current to the Batt terminal but could not show a reading from the E1 terminal to the Batt terminal. The E1 is the computer ground. I could get current from the Batt terminal to show only if I grounded the neg probe to the body. This told me, as did the FSM that the E1 computer ground was faulty. I could do a continuity from the E1 to the body and to just about any place else grounded on the truck and it would show continuity. The E1 terminal on the check connector was also showing that it was grounded. I had obvoius hard evidence that the E1 was grounded so that was not my problem.
I spent another hour chasing my tail and came to the faulty conclusion that the 2nd computer had been fried upon install and was showing the same symptoms as the original computer.
I about gave up. The FSM shows the E1 terminal grounding but does not show exactly where it grounds.
I left it alone for a while and on a whim looked at the diagram in the crap Haynes book. I noticed the E1 ground went just downstream from the O2 sensors and ran on the same wire that grounds the O2 sensors. Took a look and sure enough the BR wire to the number 1 O2 sensor was broken. Fixed the wire and no more problem.
Best I can figure is that the computer eventually grounds into the exhaust through the O2 harness. Go figure!
