Ok so I've seen tons of threads and read through all of them regarding the issues with the navigation ML systems in the LX470s. However, I have not found a single person talking about the issue I'm currently going through, and I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I bought my 2003 LX470 2ish years ago with a working sound system, albeit with speakers blown beyond repair. I replaced the front two speakers with a JBL set as recommended by Crutchfield so I could have some sound that was decent. I ran this setup since I have purchased the truck.

Three months ago I started to noticed static/crackling in the passenger door speaker - no biggie, it's probably starting to go out and needs replacement. Two months ago, I get in the truck and there's zero noise at all. Speakers don't work and the screen doesn't beep when I select anything. The navigation still works and the computer talking to me through the nav still works.

After a ton of digging and checking fuses, I assume it's the amplifier that has gone bad due to no bars appearing in the Audio menu that indicates volume level. I bite the bullet and order a refurbished amplifier that's of the exact serial number as mine. $450 later, I install the amp, fully anticipating to turn the truck on and enjoy my stereo again. No dice.

I proceed to check (again) every single fuse in the truck's engine bay and both footwells. I mean every one, not just the radio relevant ones. All fuses are 100% functional and there is no apparent issue. These checks were done both visually and with a continuity check via multimeter.

That bring me to today.
This video is currently my issue.

I have no idea what the problem is, and I'm about to embark on a 2 week trip through Ouray and Moab, so I'd love to have a stereo and not a bluetooth speaker. If anybody has any idea what this might be, I would really appreciate it. If I'm missing anything or forgetting something, let me know. I'm a pretty competent mechanical and electrical guy, which is partially why this is so frustrating. Thanks in advance!!

Have you checked the connections to the amp from the head unit with a multimeter? Is the amp getting a signal from the head unit? The amp is most likely getting power since the head unit is powering up.

No I havent - any idea what wires those might be? I don’t have a wiring diagram on hand, but I can definitely check for voltage if I knew what wires I was looking for

Here is a link to a schematic showing the pins from the head unit and a link detailing the wire colors and corresponding function. I also found a thread with a nav delete that may have some wiring info.

Hope that helps!

The volume control on the head unit controls the volume by changing the gain of the external amp (not by changing the output level of the head unit, which is how most head units work). The weird behavior in your video means that either the encoder in the head unit is faulty, or there’s a problem with the LAN that the parts of the audio system use to communicate with each other.

You can find the manual for the head unit (made by Pioneer) by searching for “Pioneer KEX-M9527ZT/UC Service Manual” somewhere like manualslib.com. Section 6.2 of the manual shows how you can use the touch screen to get into an audio system self-diagnostic mode, which may provide some clues about what’s going wrong. There’s also a button in that mode called “LAN Monitor” which might be useful, but I’ve never used it.

This was the key to getting my stereo fixed. I purchased a functioning head unit from a wrecked 2003 LX and installed it. As soon as I turned the car on, the stereo came to life, like nothing was wrong. Thanks a lot for everyone’s input, I really appreciate it. Hopefully if anyone has issues with their ML system and it’s not the amp, they stumble across this thread. Cheers!!
