Hey guys,

So my partner just put a deposit on her first car, a 1988 HJ60 with factory fitted ARB turbo!

Solid cruiser apart from a new engine.

Have found a 2H out of a 1984 HJ60 and wondering if these will be the same engine and/or interchangeable?

Not sure what the early/late years of the 2H engines are and couldn't find it through a search.

Cheers!

? Buying a 1988 2H HJ60 which needs a new engine. Have found a 1984 2H engine out of a HJ60, are the engines interchangeable or were there differences in the 2H engines between these years?

Yes, they are the same. But you should look for the 12HT as it is also a direct bolt in, but with a turbo.

They come in 24 volt and 12 volt but most likely they will both be 12V. 24V engines in Australia will Japanese imports.
In any case because you have 2 engines ,any minor differences can be resolved by interchanging parts .

Do you plan on keeping the turbo? A few things to consider. The 2h does not have the oil squirters for piston cooling that the 12ht has and if you want any kind of long term reliability, reinforced ring land pistons are a must (alfin insert).

Also, the early 2h motors (pre 85)have piston sleeves (liners) and later engines are parent bore and cheaper to rebuild.

Cheers guys. I own a 24v JDM HJ61 with 12HT and previously an SVO powered 2H HJ75 Troopy camper and have spent a bit of time under the bonnet of both, haven't worked on 2H's for a while though.
Will be keeping the turbo setup, it's an original dealer setup with original receipts, they were only ever setup to run about 8lbs of boost.
Thanks @Locked79, that's what I was after with the changeout years and differences. If my memory serves me right, they also have different water cooling jackets? As the long block I'm looking at is '84, as long as all accessories bolt up and it can go in there's no problem.
What I'm thinking at the moment is to pull the original and do the changeover and rebuild the original to turbo spec while its out so she can be on the road for minimal $$ then swap the rebuilt original back later at some point.
It looks like I'm about to go on a 4:1 away roster with work so I won't be able to do a rebuild anytime soon.
It's a shame as the original motor is one of the cleanest I've seen, not a single oil leak or drip, the original blue paint still looks great but at least she'll have a solid reliable ride after its all done.

To make it easier, make sure the engine you're getting comes from an auto or manual as applicable to your truck, the injector pumps are different I believe.

That's a very fair point, thanks. TBH I was thinking to put the current injector pump onto the replacement engine, but that will be dependant on what kind of setup I can find and whether we find a complete motor or only a bare block.

why are engines with sleeves more expensive to rebuild? purchase of the sleeves and fitting them is more than boring out the parent bore? sleeves seem a good idea.

The cost of buying and installing sleeves then boring. Sleeves are not machined to be a install and run setup. Parent bore only requires machining. Plus pistons and rings for both scenarios.

Oh, I see, bit of a bummer. Some engines can just slide in frozen sleeves into a warmed core and are virtually ready to go for new pistons , I believe. Just scored 2 x complete 2h engines, one sleeved, one parent bore for a good price, both need work tho, heads look good.
