Year they changed the rear spoiler?

My Father has a white '04 LC with no rear spoiler/wind deflector and wants to add the "whale tail" style one. What year did Toyota introduce these, and can you get them without the 3rd brake light in them?

Alright thanks fellas.

Like the running boards, I thought we were supposed to REMOVE the rear spoiler?!?

Well I took mine off, but for some reason the old man likes them. I'd give him mine, but it's the older style..

Post this in the "parts wanted" area. You will probably find someone who removed theirs and would like to get it out of the garage.

Yeah good call, I'll try that.

Careful with the knock off brands though, they look the same in the picture, but they aren't. Usually they are larger.

My buddy bought a knock off for his, and he voiced what I was thinking. It looked like s***.

I've got an '02 LX and when I bought the vehicle it had no rear spoiler, but the rear window washer pedestal was broken off and the surrounding sheet metal was dented slightly.

I decided to add the "whale tail" style rear spoiler as that would hide the small dent. (Personally I prefer that style to the aluminum version.)

I bought mine on ebay, but had a pretty miserable experience. The first one I bought didn't look at all like the photo in the listing and the seller had a "too bad- so sad" attitude. I was successful in going through ebay to get the return. The second one (from a different seller) looks a lot like the oem one.

Installation was a bit of a pain, but I'm very happy with the outcome.

The "factory" spoiler has a third brake light and they use a filler panel that replaces the third brake light in the rear hatch. The ebay spoiler did not have that filler panel so presumably you have two third brake lights?

I thought that was kind of cheesy so I bought a Toyota third brake light filler panel (they come pre-painted and color matched to your vehicles color) and used that in conjunction with the aftermarket spoiler.

So did you just run the wiring from the window brake light through the spoiler and into the new light?

I'm not sure what you mean by "window brake light"?

The factory "whale tail" spoiler uses a short additional wiring harness. I bought one of those and plugged that into the existing wiring harness in place of the hatch mounted third brake light (you'll recall I removed that and replaced it with a filler panel).

I cut the ends off that short harness and wired that to the new third brake light that came with the aftermarket spoiler. The aftermarket spoiler attaches to the hatch quite tightly and I drilled a hole through the hatch for that wire. The hole is located under the area covered by the spoiler and I drilled the hole large enough so I could put a rubber grommet in the hole to protect the wire. That wire then runs through a corresponding hole in the spoiler to the light. All of the wiring and fasteners holding the spoiler to the hatch are hidden.

The ebay seller I had problems with was SpoilerSmart. I cannot recommend them.

Here's a link to a spoiler that at first glance looks okay, but if you look closely it differs quite a bit from a oem spoiler: Custom Spoiler 2001-2007 Lexus LX470 | eBay

Makes sense to me. I'll get with cruiserparts.net to see if they have a legit spoiler.

I should mention a couple of other things we did; mostly as suggestions....

The spoiler itself is a bit cumbersome to handle for one person and as such it would be very easy to scratch your vehicle. We used masking tape to liberally cover the general area where it was to be installed.

The spoiler I bought came with some fairly large sheet metal screws to hold it to the hatch. I thought that was a "less than optimal" situation. The spoiler had some short pieces of aluminum tube molded into the spoiler for the screws to bite into.

We drilled out the aluminum pieces and used some flanged steel nutserts instead. That way we could use threaded bolts which we felt had much better holding capability

BTW, I looked through my records and found the second spoiler came from Zigs Auto. Here's a link:1999-2007 Lexus LX470 Painted OEM Style Rear Spoiler

I got the painted version. The quality of their painting was marginally okay. If I was going to do it again I would get the primer version and have it painted professionally.
