Thanks, everyone! I hope it's the drive flange and not more serious, as some of you have suggested. I haven't wheeled this one yet. Only mods since purchase at 79k are K&N Intake and BFG 285s. I've driven it nearly 20k without a rumble, hum, grind, scrape, or hint of trouble. I'm very "in touch" with the mechanicals of my trucks and can "feel" when something isn't right. You guys know what I mean.

Will be hearing from Toyota today. They know me and they know I know Toyotas and dealers, so I at least expect honesty and not told I need a new Johnson Rod in there!

Thanks again - I'll update.

And that's a "rough math" estimate on those here on MUD.

There are thousands out there that are just fine.

Just like 1FZ-FE HG issues.

Correct. It's rough, and probably negatively biased considering the crowd but its the best data we have and even at that its pretty darn positive data compared to other brands.

I've been trying to warn people of this issue when they tell me they can get the same LX as mine for cheaper in a 2000 or 2001. I tell them watch out for the tranny issues.
That was my same comment, probably about the same % at 80 series HG failures.

I agree. I would love to see LX/LC tranny stats compared to a GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, etc.

quick update -

As predicted, Toyota Stealer wants $4400 for the bendover-and-take-it price. I told them to cut in half and let their techs learn something from it, but I got the talking points response. I told them I'm not paying $1000 mark-up on the part and not being charged extra labor for B/C mechanic.

So, help me brothers! What are my real options? I have $3000 but I don't want waste any. Can I get it rebuilt by a reputable Japanese trans mechanic? Buy a trans wholesale and have a good wrenched install it?

I am doing all I can to not pay full price.

Thannks all. and Thanks to my 92 4Runner with 207k miles; she keeps me mobile!

Here is a place selling rebuilt transmissions for $1489:

I imagine that the remainder of your $3000 should easily cover the price of installation.

Good luck,

Chris

Ok ya'll, so what's all this fuss about the 00's tranny failures? I mean, what exactly in tranny is prone to fsil? Just bought a 99 hundie and I'm wondering if there's any difference between the 00's a343f and the 99's a343f... Sorry for the rook questions, as mentioned just bought one and trying to catch up on all maintence and reading about all the ins and outs on the hundie....

The story goes that they had a bad batch of bushings go through in 2000 through early 2001. The failure rate is still very low, it just gets headlines in user groups.

Yeah, so the story goes.

The data you conveniently exclude is that the LCs in this particular story failed at an abnormally high rate; an aberration in the data.

That's MY story, and I'm sticking to it.
