Maybe something off the beaten path around Sedona? Get back into the red rocks somewhere?

All the paths are beaten around Sedona.:meh:

Any other suggestions we can do sans permit? I'd like to knock off some the trails in the Massey book but they probably don't hold much interest for the natives. Maybe hit an area with some and just explore? I know one trail in there is the Butterfield stage route but the book shows just a small portion. The history buff in me would love to follow it further if possible, or has it been wiped out?

If your talking about the trail by Maricopa, I heard it been closed for "vegetation rehab".:frown:

I'm liking the Broken Arrow idea. Are any permits required, or can we just jockey into position between the Heeps?

Someone offline was talking about Home Tank Draw and Mullican Canyon, what are they like?

Rated 3&4 of 10, so easy trails, over 6,000ft, so COLD, good summer trails.

We still haven't found where this trail goes? The turn off goes north off of 160 at the big cattle tank, between Sycamore and the Verde.

So someone with some local trail knowledge, lets get this ironed out and a trail picked for the 26th ALREADY that doesnt need permits.

Would you want to drive 160 (including "that hill"...) to get to the turnoff, or 185(2?) off Superhighway, then 1096, and then 160 to 1062? The latter might be faster...

This is the more exploratory "...there's a trail, we haven't been on it, where does it go..." kind of stuff, not a named trail one can check off a list. Claudia and I are up for it, though.

This is not meant to detract anyone from the Sedona gig. It's just that WE won't be going to Sedona, but (the travel gods smiling...) we'll be out on a trail on Saturday.

The latter would be my choice, had enough fun on that hill last time!:hillbilly: There is another trail going north that is still on the list, 407 closer to the river, goes to Cottonwood Basin. Would have a choice of returns, back the way we came, cross the river (have I heard that before?) or lower Sycamore.

X2, I love desert wheeling and it's only comfortably done in the winter, so that is my preference. :princess:

I don't think we can cross the river at FR160 - seasonal closure re Bald Eagle nesting, starts usually Dec 1. We have to return on FR160 to the 1096 intersection.

Attached is a pic from the proposed Tonto NF map. The way I read it, 1855/1878 is the main drag from Sycamore. The connector up the hill to 1096A is 1856. 1852 is Ironwood Wash. 1062 looks to be a spur, but who knows? FR160C (the section towards the river is slated to be closed, so who knows how many chances we'll have to drive in there. I liked the solitude and the view on 160C, and we've also driven 1096D once (in the K5, and not realizing the rez dealio way back then...)

Yep, 1856 is the short cut/connector that we use. Thought the eagle thing is Dec 31, :whoops:. Maybe 407 would be good, but not sure where the eagle signs are, may not be able to go that far on 160?

Agree, that area is cool, especially being so close to Sycamore mess.

IIRC the eagle closure is maybe a quarter mile or so from the river? Claudia thinks it's further up the trail, though...

Since this is Tonto NF - I suppose we need a Tonto pass?

and I pop my head out of my hole to see if its still winter....

where are we getting lost on Saturday?

I'm all for this 160 exploratory thing. Just picked up my tires, and UPS says the spacers are en route and on time for a delivery Thursday- which cuts it kinda close, especially considering the holiday shipping mess and possible delays- so if all goes well I'll be out. I may try to convince a couple of people to join us- lifted 80 with running boards still attached, and a stock FJC. From what I remember (which is fuzzy) the stock FJC shouldn't have any trouble...

Exploring 160 - one down.

Rug Road and "something" in/around Superior, Jan 1/2.

Besides that: Kevin brought up the topic of a North-of-Lake-Pleasant run - we did that some 4(?) years ago, found a cool slot canyon with a shelf road - and then it got dark, and dusty on the way out. Wouldn't be a bad idea to revisit that area - but we could hit a Table Mesa trail first...

Who knows the TM sheet metal-friendly trails??
