Gentlemen,

It seems as though I may have stumbled into bigger problems while removing the rear axles for a rear disk brake conversion...

While there is still hope I can fix it myself, or concede and deliver it to the local ring and pinion shop here in Seattle ($$$), I think it best to see if there is another axle out there just in case.

Also, I friend posed a question - would a rear axle from a '78 or '79 4x4 Toyota pick-up work?

Thanks for any help / leads.

I'm confused, is your diff bad? axle shafts? or the axle housing?
assuming this is a LC? what year?
mini truck rear axles are centered diff, and most likely not work if you're working on a LC

The PU 3rd won't work, you need to be specific on which year because a '78 will have 4:11s and a '79 3:73s. The previous any '74-'78 40/45/55 third will have the flange you want, the later is '79 specific though you can use any 3rd up to '87 if you adapt the flange.

Good luck!

My bad - I thought that '78 and '79 were the same ratio. Mine is the '79 thus 3:73. What went wrong for me was one of my bearings on the drivers side of the internal limited slip differential is out of spec per the machine shop where I had the bearings pressed. The bearing did take, and it on the shaft quite tight. Shop tech says probably no cause for concern, which concerns me... How long will it last... I have considered going with a Detroit Locker as one possible solution. The other possible solution I considered was finding another axle. The entire assembly is back together in the shop and is tight. I will reinstall and test without then with a load (tires) soon.
