howdy all,
well after much feet dragging, procrastination, excuses, and waaaay too much missed fun time in my cruiser... I will be swapping the trans in my 80 on Friday and Saturday of this week. i can promise beer and cursing, with a chance of success. Ali and Daisy are penciled in accomplices and anyone else that wants to laugh at another man's sorrow can come by, just hope you can take a punch, ("if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball" comes to mind, I'm giving daisy enforcer duty  )

wife and kid are out of town those two days so it's batch-time in my garage and high time to get some chit done i've been too busy to get to.

So if you are bored or haven't ever seen a grown man cry, come on by my place. roughly 7miles S on 337 (east mtns)... all are welcome. send me a PM for directions if morbid curiosity gets the better of you.

now back to your regular scheduled programming. (internal monologue, WTF does the cheers have to be with a glass of wine? not that there is anything wrong with that, if you are into that sort of thing...) ahh better now...

-john

I might be able to swing by Friday for a bit. What time are you getting started?

8-9am if i had to guess... i have abig list of pre-swap prep i need to get done before the heavy lifting starts. trying to get some of that done this week after work, but worst case, i could see friday morn starting up. stuff like i need to move over my new trans kickdown cable from my old trans, replace the seals in the new trans, and engine rear main seal (although that requires existing trans removal) are on the list...

btw, my 29"er will be in the garage too :D

just saw your thread, would've stopped by after walking the dogs this morning. do post up your progress, or give a call (dos ocho 6 - 6 quatro tres 9) if you need an emergency brew run or Pondo burgers delivered. :hillbilly:

I'd come watch the busted knuckle show tomorrow, 'cept I'm working. Best of luck! :)

progress update...

i was right at the point of ready to drop the trans (the heavy part) when ali and then lynn came by, perfect timing. (i had to get off frozen prop shaft bolts, disconnect cooler lines, half a dozen connectors, center console shifter linkages, basically got everything disconected so the only thing left was to upbolt the bellhousing...) we got the old one out, with some drama, but not as bad as i thought. we had a late lunch and then swapped over the throttle kickdown cable which involves dropping the pans and snaking the cable off a cam and reinstalling, replaced the rear main seal, input and output seals on the new trans, and cleaned off the old transfer that was staying with the rig.

we got the new trans up and bolted. all that's left is torque converter bolts, reattaching the xfer case, and then all the stuff i took off (connectors, lines, etc) which i plant to bite off tomorrow. i still have the temp gauge to get in too, that might have to wait until another weekend.

all in all, fantastic teamwork and awesome progress. couldn't have done it like that alone, for sure. matter of fact i might be squished under the rig instead of typing right now. ;)

hopefully tomorrow is as fruitful and it might be roadworthy :meh: i'm still optimistic.

well it's all over. Daisy and I got the xfer case mounted up this morning and all the other crap connected (connectors, cooling lines, x-members, cooling lines. etc...) i only had a gallon of ATF so we put it in and idled it, barely on the bottom of the dipstick, so i bought more tonight to put in tomorrow. but everything seems good and no huge puddles or bad noises yet. phew. tomorrow will be more of a test drive.

huge thanks to Ash, Lynn and Daisy, couldn't have done it without you guys! Trans+TC+xfer is 450lbs+(and don't forget the metric $h1t-ton of bolts)!!!

You're welcome and I learned something new. This info will come in handy when I drop my Tcase this winter. Sorry I couldn't make it to the party yesterday but sounded like you guys were on the fast track to project completion.

You're welcome. didn't feel like I did much. It was a learning experience and that's always good. Please post up the results of the test drive.

PHEW!

IT'S ALIIIIVE...... IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!

ok that fit more when i took the maiden voyage on halloween. but running into and around town as well as playing a bit in 4lo in cedro, everything seems to check it out! honestly on hills and on the highway this tranny is better than the last ever was. more responsive, predictable, firmer but smoother... just all around in better shape. just goes to show, SAY NO TO REMANS!!! (which the previous tranny was from PO)

so all in all looks like the 80 is in the clear and ready for action yet again... :bounce::D:steer::grinpimp:
