well, I may have been just lucky until now, but I must say that I have enjoyed working on small engines.
Just resuscitated another one yesterday.
A bit of detective work involved, some systematic procedure and bingo... Kinda fun and feels good to get it working again.
They are pretty robust affairs really considering that carbs are inherently somewhat iffy gizmos.
The thing that's interesting about those engines is that they may appear completely utterly dead with no clear evidence of the problem at first and at the end it may just be something as stupid as an old piece of tubing or a vent plugged etc.
I guess it could also be utterly frustrating under the wrong conditions. I can see that your average gardener may just give up. Meaning either they pay a ton at the dealer or we can get good deals at garage sales...

Fun!

OK, well the last one I fixed had nothing more wrong with it than the line from the bulb to the carb. A pin hole. From old age no doubt.
Figured it out by noting there was no gas visible in the bulb, the saw was briefly running on brake cleaner in the carb, the cylinder and plug were dry, and there was a good spark...

wait til you find one that won't rev up because of a mud dobber nest in the muffler port!
